hmm, I see I am not the only one with a 16ish hand horse at 5 ft 10. Mine is 16.1 but my daughter said today that I look out of proportion on him and he looks too tiny.
I don't have a horse yet but am looking for one to share with husband and he is 6ft 2 (I'm 5ft1). We have looked at 16-16.1hh. The one we were going to buy was a mw 16hh mare and he looked fine on her.
I'm 5'10 and have a 16hh and a 15.3hh Look fine on both, it depends on the build of the horse I think, if the horse has enough barrel to accomodate your leg you look fine and completely in proportion (I can ride 14hh's and look ok.... the type that are wider than they are tall ^.^ ) but if you have a horse with long legs and not much body it may look as if you are too big.
So it really depends, the most important thing is if they are strong enough to carry you, doesn't matter so much if it's not aesthetically pleasing as long as the horse is happy.
My horse is approx 15.1 (a Dales) and I'm 5ft8. My OH is 6ft6 and regularly rides him. He doesn't look too big or out of place on him at all, and my horse definitely doesn't struggle. I think the strength and weight carrying ability of the horse is much more important to consider than height.
I'm 5'9 and ride a 15.2 and a 15.3. Like others have said it depends on the individual horse and rider shapes. I used to have a 15.2 TB and my feet were near his knees, however my current horses are much stockier, and take up my leg so I don't look too big. My 6'4 brother has ridden the 15.2 without any problems.
Im 5ft 11 and have a 17.2, but last horse was 16.1 and i looked fine on him, he was deep in the girth so i was ok, and he wasnt chunky either he was a tb so i think it depends purely on the horse. As like us they are different in every way
Im 5ft 10 and a bit and ive had horses of all heights. My current is 16.1hh (at his withers... but he's very high withered).
I was particularly cautious of his size when I first tried him, but my trainer assured me we didnt look an odd pairing and no one has ever mentioned anything
As others have said, much of it depends on the horse's build. In my late teens I had a 15.1hh and while I wouldnt actively look for anything that size again, he was a stocky little thing and while I looked slightly tall, it wasnt anything horrific.
I am 5ft 10 and a half (v important LOL) and I now have a 16-2hh (pic of me on her in the PG) - looking at the pics I do think I look a wee bit big but she needs to fill out and get some more condition on her so once that is done she will be fine! Boss, on the far right in my sig is under 16hh and I dont think I look ridiculously big, my speed horse in Spain was 15-1hh and she could carry me all day, although I DID look big on her LOL
I think it depends on the horses build as to if you look to big or not. My old horse was 16hh but quite fine (i took her over from my sister) so i felt quite big on her but was definatley not too heavy so wasnt a problem. However when i got a new horse i wanted one a bit bigger so i felt more in proportion so got a 16.2 who has a slightly bigger build. I feel better on her.
I'm 6ft 2in and the most comfortable I've felt on a horse is a 17.2hh ... anything smaller andI end up kicking the poor beast on the elbows!
i am just over 5'10 and my mare is 15.3hh. i have been told that i look too big on her, but she is more than capeable of carrying me so i dont care what people think anymore!
here are some photos for comparison (appologise for the photoshow!)
I'm 5'10" and I ride a 14.1 and a 16.1. I feel more comfortable on bigger built, tall horses though. On scrawny types I feel a bit perched on! I rode a small arab the other week and I felt there was nothing in front!! Thought I was going to go out the front door.
