Which would you rather have in my position?

The yard is under a mile so the majority of the time I walk there, will be even less this year as my flat is closer to the yard than last years so an extra 5 minutes can be spent in bed

TBH I wouldn't be prepared to travel very far even if the yard was perfect so I would say 5 miles however if it was perfect and fairly cheap then 10. But because I only keep him on livery whilst I am at uni and he is at home during the holidays I do not think I could have him very far away from me at all as it would be extreamly weird for me so I think that would limit how far I would travel.

My yard is currently at the end of my road

So I walk down as it takes about 3 minutes .

But I have travelled up to 30 miles away to the yard but I wasn't on DIY .

If the yard ticks EVERY box and there is no-where else nearer like it , I would be happy to travel

I could have had them 10 mins walk away but no grass t/o so not for me.

Instead I keep them 15 miles away and this can take 25 mins to over an hour if the traffic is bad.

Yard is worth the travel, though there are some days it would be nice to not have the travel.

I only do evenings and have two days a week on full livery as I could not have the time with my job to go up twice a day every day of the week.

My yard is about 12 miles or so away - takes 15 to 20 minutes, however it is on my way to work/nursery/parents house (vital for childcare whilst I play ponies) so is more convenient for me. I tried a yard in the same village as my parents but it didn't suit me, the inhabitants were all a little too far up their own rear ends and (to me) seemed to spend an inordinate amount of time sneering and sniping at what everyone else was/was not doing. The 'new' yard is very much worth the extra few minutes, it suits me very well and is a very friendly and happy place to be.

I think if you really love a yard, it is well worth the extra few minutes of travelling in the car - being at a yard two minutes down the road, but dreading going there and rushing everything so you can get away quickly just isn't what owning a horse is meant to be about.

Heehee!! My new yard is down my street and over a tow path bridge!! It will take me about 7- 10 minutes to walk it but I just bought a bike yesterday and learned to ride it so it will be quicker for me! I can't believe it's taken me 33 years to learn to ride a bike but it will be worth it for when I have to go down and do the evening feed.

I find we really are spoiled here in the UK though with commuting times to get to yards. In Canada, it used to take me about 2 hours by bus and train to get to the stables or an hour's drive.

Funny as I was going to ask a similar question, I'm so unhappy at my yard at the moment, there have been problems with mares getting hormonal and it resulted in the fields being seperated.

The past few months have been fantastic, boys playing happily and mares still trying to kill each other! However, people are moaning that the fields are not being rested, yet now the grazing is the best its been since i've been there as its being topped and good grass has come through.

So, because people are unhappy re not having knee high crap grass, the herd is being mixed again and I've been told that my horse will go out for 3 hours on his own in the morning!

So, I am looking to move and 10 miles will be my max and that seems to be the general conscientious

Current yard is 5 miles away, and I tend to cycle there and back twice a day when I have nothing else (ie, supply teaching) on. My new yard is 6ish miles and, again, I will cycle most of the time if I can, but we drive past it to get to work so it is a lot easier in that sense.

I would not wish to travel further than 10 miles to my horse, and even 5 miles is a push!

I am just about to move my 2 horses to a new yard which is 20-25mins away from my house!!! However it is on-route to/from work.

Horse no.1 is currently 10mins from my house (on way to work) but horse no.2 (injured + turned away) is 30mins away (not on way to work, in fact opposite direction!!)

No2 was supposed to be out on loan. Not anymore. Can't afford to have horse no.2 on same yard as no.1 as its minimum part-livery.
So am moving em' both to grass-livery (with closeable field shelter)
