So am i missing something... had my lad up for loan to stay at my place, they can treat him as own etc no feed to buy i take care of everything apart from shoes...so it works out 65 every 6 weeks, included in this is free trips to comps (i even always pay for his first class ) they get to go to beach, fun rides anywhere really, horse is a great little showjumper and so quite happy to take him even when im not taking my own at my cost.. all i ask is that they look after im as their own, they are responsible for mucking out brushing etc, so had lovely girl come got on great, shes been to dressage comps hunter trials sj etc won lots rossettes very good with him....BUT shes so unreliable, i get a text sometimes sometimes not and she just doesnt turn up for 2-3 days, so i have to see to him aswell as my other 2, or for instance my child gets chicken pox but bless him he has to still come with me.. sit in car and play ipad lol til i feed muck out etc..if she has a hair appointment she cant turn up at all that day... anyway sorry for rant but im sick so just told her not to bother coming back..so now i have all three to see to and its coming into winter and not likely to find a loaner now !! god when i was younger and not fortunate to own my own horse i would have been so grateful for a chance like this ! or am i missing something?

why dont you live near me?!?!? seriously I would be there in a second.

Maybe try advertising with a price instead of just shoes, even £20 a month but paid in advance, that way people would most likely turn up because they dont want to waste their money.

Hope you find someone soon!

I would bill her for full livery on the days she doesn't come. I've known people do this with sharers, it works well for making it clear that the horse is their responsibility on their days, or in your loaners case every day. Give her the phone number of whoever it is she needs to tell that she's not coming, tell her the charges, then remind her that you offered an almost free full loan of your horse because you need him looked after because you can't do it. She needs to understand its not that she has the option to come and see horse/ride every day, but that she must come whether she's riding or not. If you decide to part company, make sure the next time you advertise that you say its a full loan rather than advertising for a sharer or part loaner. I say this because I'm thinking there must be some reason she thinks its an 'as and when' arrangement and perhaps it was the wording of the original ad.

Tbh money was never an issue for me i just find it very hard to manage all 3 especially in winter so was looking for help more than financial contribution..but maybe your right...i think maybe just because im there they think ah its ok she'll do it...but that was the whole point of getting a loaner in first place so i dont have to ! Im just amazed because i know she couldnt afford her own and shes very good with horses, i dont think shes lost interest as if we have a ride coming up she will not come over for days then text me morning of the ride asking what time we heading off ! ( i do put foot down then and politely say im busy)

I have to agree, it's too cheap so she's not loosing out if she only turns up once a week. I found when I had my two on share here that 'free' shares were much more unreliable than ones that paid £20 a week. Money was not the issue for me, it was time, but charging got a keener person in my experience.
You can always stop charging after say six months when they are settled in?

You might be lucky :) I took my mare on loan this time last year and I've just bought her so people will still be looking. Taking a horse on in winter wasn't a problem for me and we don't have an indoor school.

Hope you find someone for him soon If you choose to advertise him again :)

s and s i did make her aware it was full loan not share etc as i have another 2 horses...she knew he was her responsibility but we did become friends and our children go to same school so maybe i was too soft in laying boundaries in beginning but after it happened a few times i reinforced my position and she was great for a couple of months then just kept not turning up..silly excuses.. but funnily enough she always managed to turn up for sj comps etc .. i may just remove shoes and turn him away for the winter and reassess in spring.. im just suprised.. it seems people expect a lot these days, i used to carry tack for 2 miles each way just to get a ten min ride lol

That sounds like an amazing deal and I would have snapped your hand off for it a few years ago! In fact I'm considering it now and I have my own horse...

Oh well sounds like you're better off without her then. At least it wasn't a loan where she took him to another yard and then neglected him. The plus side to finding someone in winter is they will maybe be a more dedicated person.

Well thats what i thought lol... i just didnt want to put people off by charging as some great horse people maybe just dont have the money to look after one so thought anyone willing to put the time in could benefit..but maybe the other posters are right if they are paying they may take it more seriously ! Just a shame really
