People just want to bug me today!! Deep litter query!

Ok, to me deep littering is taking out the poo, and leaving the base + not disturbing the pee as thats when it can smell when the oxygen gets in , and topping it up as it needs it - but poo clearing every day!

Am I right or wrong? I am just asking as I chose deep litter to save time cos my boy is very clean and does everything in a set area - I've given him a month normal mucking out so that he can sort his doodads out and so sharer can figure out where he does stuff. As of last weekend he went deep litter - I did the day after I did it and only like 6 poos at most - in the same place, not mashed in. Today after sharer has done him 2 days there are PANCAKED poos UNDER the clean straw - I took out around 20!! It took me 40 mins to do what should only take 15 mins and I was FUMING!! I assumed that after 3years of horse share before and having been around horses longer than me she would know what to do - BIG MISTAKE!!

I am definitely feeling like the world is out to pee me off today!
 
Blimey. I'd be fuming too! Deep littered stables have lots of advantages but they still need to be managed as you are doing. Maybe she needs a few mucking out lessons - you can send her round to me, she can muck mine out anytime she likes!!
 
Are you thinking that shes got it the wrong way around or is her mucking out cr@p. I once got into a heated debate about how deep litter is not in fact taking out the wee and leaving the poo, became quite and argument.
 
Deep litter can be either. The point is you cover the dirty bed (whether it's pee or poo, doesn't matter) with fresh straw every day and then muck out fully and start again some time later.
 
yip that is what i understand to be deep littering, i deep litter mine, just poo pick daily with gloves and bucket (yuck i know) and dont disturb the wet underneath
 
Incidently no one at my yard has heard of poo picking with gloves and look at me like I am mad- i find its the easiest way of removing the poo and not taking shavings or straw too

hmmm same thing this morning for me, had 2 days of oh mucking out - she has worked with horses for years and years in highly reputable yards, and weve decided to semi deep litter and this morning,pancakes everywhere! on top of a cr*p time in the school then smashing my coffee jar in the tack room im not best pleased and its only the start of the day!

A lot of people seem to think people use deep litter because they can't be bothered to muck out properly. For some people it suits - personally I don't like it but I do have an unhealthy love for my rubber matting

Deep litter on straw you should remove the droppings and excess wet, sort the banks then add fresh bedding as required.
