People really dont care!

ohhh that really is sad. there are truely heartless people out there.

I picked a hedgehog up from the middle of road the other day, poor thing was covered in blood and wheezing, i really didnt expect it to make it through the night.

I left it at the bottom of the garden with some cat food and i got all our cats in for the night so it was in as stress free environment as possible

It was still alive the next morning so I phoned the RSPCA who directed me to a lady who looks after injured hedgers. I left it there and got a phone call the next week saying it had made a full recovery! yayyyy!

She said it would be best to bring it back to my house as that was its home but i refused just in case it went on the road outside again.

Some people do care. A lot. But its never enough to make up for the masses that care only for themself =(

How sad, poor little kitten :( Bless you for trying to help him/her though.

I once forced my hubby to stop on a country road so I could help a Woodpecker fledgling. I know you shouldn't interfere with them really, but was so worried about it getting run over, that I managed to get it into the hedgerow so the parents could still find it.

You did the kind thing. No animal deserves to suffer like that and shame on all those who walked by.
We live in the middle of a 'shoot' :( so there are hundreds of young pheasants about, causing havoc on the roads ! Sadly there are many drivers who just tear through them, leaving bodies flapping or flattened, without a care.:mad:
I can't bear to see them squashed, :o so provided they're not too messy  I usually pull over and place them on the verge out of the way. It's also a way to check if they're still alive, although they usually die if they have been hit with a vehicle. It's so sad, as they have such a short life anyway !!! :(

Poor lttle cat.
Someone who lives near us used to let their dog out on his own. We told them lots of times he was going on the main road, but she wouldnt have it. One day i saw a car hit him, we went and knocked on the door but she had gone back to bed! It was us who put him in the car and took him to the nearest vets but it was too late.

I'm the same as everyone else - I just don't understand why people don't stop! Obviously there are some occasions, like on busy dual carriageways or motorways where it would be dangerous to stop, but a lot of the time there is no excuse! My cat was hit by a car about 18 months ago and, although I don't know exactly what happened, I imagine that he darted across the road, got hit, and the carried on running, as he was found in a neighbour's garden next to the road. I don't believe for one moment that the person who hit him wasn't aware of what had happened, as I know the stretch of road very well and know from his injuries and where he was found that he was hit by a car going downhill, when anything jumping out from the side of the road would have been clearly visible. Added to that the fact that my cat is pure white and huge! I'm not saying that it was all the fault of the person who hit him, although I know that a lot of cars go down that hill far too fast, but what upsets me is the fact that they didn't stop! Okay, it may all have happened very quickly and they may not have been certain exactly what happened, but he was hit right outside a row of houses, and all the people who live there know that we own a big white cat, so if the person had just stopped, knocked on a door and said "I think I might have hit something...I think it was white", someone would have rung us! As it was, he wasn't found until the following day when he had been lying outside all night in absolute agony with his leg broken in 3 places! It is just sheer luck that he survived the night and is still with us! Anyway, rant over!

This happened to me on the way to work, (school), car had hit this cats face and it was flipping around and people were going passed and lots of school kids were crying and screaming, I stopped the traffic and wrapped it in my brand new towel! I had to hold it until it died as it was still flipping about. Got 7 doors slammed in my face as soon as they realised it wasnt their cat! I got covered in its poo too. Had to teach in dirty jods and t shirt for the day. People are horrid, well done you for being a good human!

How horrific. Poor little kitten, thank god you stopped for him, I would have done the same.
How people can ignore an animal or someone's beloved pet in such pain and distress is beyond my comprehension.

well done you for caring enough, astounding that people just pass by. I never though of having a spare towel in the car, I will do that in future, just in case.

RIP little kitty at least at the very end it had someone fighting for it :(

:( poor little thing - that's made me feel really sad! As you say, some people really don't care.

**Fluffy Bunny warning** A few days ago I was driving along a back street quite close to me and I could see a small critter in the road in the distance, I thought it was a rat at a glance, but as I got closer I realised it was a hedgehog. I know you're not supposed to stop for animals in the road, but I did and didn't care that I was holding up about 5 cars behind me to let the little thing cross the road at it's own pace! :D

Bit odd though, it was midday in a built up residential area - I thought hedgehogs were nocturnal?

Odd you should say that, I was under the same impressionm but there was one stood motionless right in the middle of a t-junction near our yard a couple of weeks ago during the day. I thought it was dead, but a nudge was replied to with a hiss, so (using a whip - I didn't want to touch it after having watched 'The Great Escape') I very gently encouraged the ungrateful little critter to move to the embankment, hissing and grumbling all the way! lol

If an hedgehog is out during daylight hours it usually indicates it's not well or extremely hungry. Glad you stopped so he/she could cross safely :)

I too would not live with myself if I didnt stop to help
A few years ago as I was turning in to our Village off the main road I saw one of my neighbours cats run across the road ahead and get hit by the oncoming car. I drove forward and blocked the road so I could run ahead and pick her up but sadly she was already dead.
I put her in my car and drove to their house and told them what had happened and they picked her up and took her inside.
They never spoke to me ever again and heard rumours they said they think i was the one who did it :-(

Humanity is scum. I generally view people who don't like animals as the lowest form of human. Not liking animals is a sign of mental illness if you ask me!

^^^^^
This!
We castrate and spay animals to stop unwanted breeding and poor specimens isn't it about time we started doing this with the human scum. The Gene pool is getting smaller! Sorry rant over. :(

I would have done the same as you. Well done you.

Years ago someone asked me if I had seen their dog as it had escaped from their yard. I hadn't but upon walking back to my stables (next to a very busy main A road) I saw a dog lying twitching in the road. It had just been knocked down and whoever had run it over hadn't stopped and just left it in the middle of the road!. It was the same dog that the people were looking for. The twitching was the last throes of dying and I had to move him from the middle of the road and to my horror discovered it wasn't a particularly clean death. He was also a big dog.
I then had to go back and tell them that I had found him but that he was dead. Not a very pleasant job for a teenager to do. I was just as upset as them.

OMG that is awful!

Living where we do we see lots of animals that have been hit lying by the roadside......how can people not notice that they have hit something beggers belief!
We came across a badger that had been hit lying in the middle of the road late one evening, got OH to stop and move it onto the verge to save the obvious from happening (Ugh!). There were no signs of life so he moved it........when we returned a hour or so later there was no sign of the badger at all, even got out and had alook round, but nope it had vanished so we could only assume that it was out for the count when we came across it and ambled off after coming round! If OH hadn't moved it.......

That's so bad :( poor kitten!

What I don't understand is why animals get left in the middle of the road or on the roadside for the inevitable to happen... Where I live is quite rural but with some busy roads so there's often a lot of it, and sometimes its really horrible. Its so degrading for the animal!

A human wouldn't be left and driven over so why is an animal... :(

I'm forever rescuing animals - all the sick and injured ones seem to find me.

The sad reason that people will walk past an injured animal is that they don't want to be the ones responsible for the vets bill. The truth is that the vets have to treat these animals, even if it is just PTS (their code of conduct cannot allow them to leave an animal to suffer) and if the owners cannot be traced (to foot the bill) the vet surgery will cover the costs.

Muckypony - in reply to your post - it is sad to see dead animals in the middle of the road, but it is sometimes just too dangerous to stop the car to remove an already dead animal. The council are supposed to clear dead animals from the highway and they should check for ID chips on pets.

Sorry, that's what I mean, the council or someone who knows what they're doing. Surely a member of the council, or someone of a connection to the council drives past these animals. I don't expect jo public to get out if its unsafe, especially if the animal might not be totally gone, heard some stories of people being attacked by animals when they try to get out and help!

I also don't get how some people drive away, surely some animals (like deer/badgers) would totally wreck your car if you hit them at speed!

This is making me feel so depressed! I dread anything happening to my fuzzlets.

I found a dead kitten in the middle of the road the other day...jusy didn't occur to me not to stop and check it's collar. It did not have one, so I moved it to the verge with a dress that was in he boot ready for dry cleaners...I just couldn't bear the thought of it being continuously run over.

Ive also "rescued" a rabbit from some busy lanes one summer. It was stuck on the centre lane shaking and with bleeding eyes/head. So I stopped, causing a traffic jam, thinking someone had hit it. Once I got it to the wildlife hospital ten miles away, found out injuries were not caused by a car accident but rather by myxomatosis....:-/
Ah well - at least he was put down humanely and I did give them 20 quid for their troubles...

I was driving down a country lane near me and came across a car stopped with its hazards on and a very well dressed lady on her knees peering underneath it. I stopped to see if she was ok and it turned out she was trying to catch an injured squirrel. The squirrel was quite small but moving about ok although its tail seemed to have been flattened. I was very impressed with this lady as she was all dressed up in a smart dress, heels and tights but she didn't seem to mind kneeling down on the road to make sure it was ok. I did suggest it possibly wasn't the best thing to do to try to pick it up with her bare hands as I would imagine they can bite pretty hard. No one else offered to help us, even though quite a few cars went past. We couldn't catch it, but we did get it off the road and into the field nearby and I kept a look out for it but didn't see it or a squashed body on the road so I hope it lived to fight another day.

On a similar note, I was driving out of the car park in town and noticed a lady crouching by her car and not looking well. I was running late and I will admit that it did cross my mind to leave her to someone else but as soon as I thought that I knew I couldn't do it. Poor lady had had some sort of fit, fallen and cut her hand really badly and was lapsing in and out of conciousness. I called an ambulance and stayed with her til they came but again no one else offered any help, even though the car park was busy and my car was blocking the flow of traffic. A few people gathered round to watch but that was it. So its not only animals people drive past...............

Poor little kitten and poor you. You tried your best and just think at least the last thing the kitten saw was a kind person helping it and it didn't die at side of road but in a warm dry footwell.
I would do same- Im forever rescuing stray dogs and loose horses locally my OH thinks Im mad! Once i was trying herd 2 loose horses back into field and cars just drove round me and them its terrible.
