people that refer to horses as 'it'

I find it wierd that people get so annoyed about things like this. Language is funny since the meaning of a word can be totally different depending on the meaning that the person saying it attaches to it.

'It' can be used as a derogatory term......but I don't tend to surround myself with people who would go out of their way to say something derogatory about my mare. My OH calls Zoom 'it' sometimes.....it doesn't bother me in the slightest.

I also find it funny when people liken horses to children, imagine giving birth to a 15hh tb....OUCH

I couldn't care less if people referred to my horse as an "it". I don't expect everyone to know nor care what sex or what name she has. I think there would be fewer conflicts on livery yards if people weren't so hung up on such trivial things? ;-)

Calling a horse 'It' doesnt particularly bother me, but I guess it would become annoying after a while if someone was using it in a horrible way. I know someone that always used to called their horse 'The Horse'.

If someone was to call my horse 'it', then it would be a change to what he can be called :).
I also sometimes call my pony 'the pony' along with other words I won't mention on here. All terms of endearment of course, and funnily enough neither of them seem to mind what I call them.
I am not as sensitive to people calling my son 'it' now as he is 5 and if anyone does, he will stop you and tell you his name so I let him sort it out now :)

I call my nephew "The Boy"......... does that make me a bad auntie??? Sometimes, his grandad will call him boy to his face, he responds, isn't in care or therapy yet and seems to be a happy little chap.........

my boy is he and our mare is she, always- they deserve that little bit of dignity surely.

Horses don't understand the concept of dignity - they couldn't care less if they are he, she or it. I don't do it myself, but I'm not bothered if anyone else does. My horse isn't going to be bothered and I have more important things to worry about.

I couldn't care less what people call their horse so long as it is well cared for - there are far more important things in this world to get worked up about!

Yeah. Maisy cries herself to sleep every day when I call her it.

Bloody hell, its a HORSE! It doesn't know and it really doesn't care. Bugger. He/she doesn't know...

Its automatic for me when I don't know the sex of something be it horse, dog, sheep, human... it is an it. :D
Even when I do know the sex, it is just easier to say it.

Get over it/he/she/they.

yeah... i totally breakdown when my horse is called 'it'... 8-)
oh what a wonderful forum this is!
also love how everyone posts angry comments even though they say its a pointless topic, yet say im getting worked up? haha try sorting your own lives out before telling me to sort mine ;)

also - the reason there are so many conflicts on livery yards is because people like the majority on here cant help but attack things they dont agree with.. guilty conscience maybe? i dont know, but i do know that i have never had a problem with anyone on my yard as we all agree to disagree and that is that.

What an unpleasant post.

May I refer you to your OP where you attacked things you don't agree with?

everyones posts were unpleasant so thought i'd sink and do the same.
my post was simply saying that i dont like it when people refer to horses as 'it'. it was not an attack - wasnt aiming it at anyone but people seemed to take it so personally which really isnt what was intended.

the internet is a funny thing and obviously cant hear the tone in which i would say it, if you did maybe you wouldnt be so harsh. i just dont understand why so many people chose to be so mean. suppose it is more effort to be nice than it is to be harsh..

okay i dont understand what i just wrote but yeah!
can we not just agree to disagree?! you carry on calling your horses it, i'll carry on calling my horse by her name. simple as that!

i dont care what everyone else says or thinks, it is a rediculous thread, admittedly, but my horses mean alot to me, he is he and she is she, end of- to bring children into the equation is even more rediculous.

If you dont want replies on here that you might find unpleasant, dont post on here. Its as simple as that! You gave your opinion that you find it frusrating when people call your horse 'it', but get offended and nasty when people dont agree with you! Pointless!

I just think its ludicrous, there are people dying of starvation, animals neglected, children abused and some people are worried what you call a dumb animal... it just seems misplaced care to me...

Rachela, I don't think anyone posted that they have a problem with you calling your horse by its name?

However, some people, me being one of them, do not share your frustration when people refer to horses as "it", and don't see what the fuss is about.

I agree with Kitsune I don't think people have been particularly unpleasant - they just don't share your view. People tend to post straight forward responses on this forum, which makes it interesting to read :-)

then just dont post..... you're wasting your time in doing so & worrying what i think is equally as silly. if i gave any more money to charities i'd be broke myself!

i know no one has a problem with me calling my horse by her name, the posts just came across as rather ignorant to my opinion. but as i said earlier, i dont know the tone in which these things are said so things are easily misunderstood.
