I've been at my livery yard for 2 years and I am really happy there. They are a geat bunch of people...BUT it is, shall we say at the lower end of the scale, which suits me fine as I have 3 neds to keep.There is a sand school but there weren't any jumps. Anyway last xmas I bought my daughter some jumps for her to practice as she is quite into jumping. 2 sets of wings 4 poles and a filler £340!!

Anyway the beef is, that now everyone uses them without asking and frankly I think it's a bit off. Not only do they get used without my permission, one of the poles has been damaged .

I dont wanna be a meanie or a killjoy but I feel its a liberty to use them and break them and not admit it!! I cant afford to replace them!! I I did think about keeping them in my trailer, but it would be too much of an arse to get them out each time I want them.. Am I being petty?? I dont wanna fall out with anyone.. but its starting to get my goat!! What would you do?

The same thing happend to me, four of my poles where broken, I didn't replace them and nobody owned either. It is very frustrating. I would put a notice up in the school near your jumps telling people unless they are replaced nobody is allowed to use them anymore.
 
i know how you feel. A bit of courtesy goes a long way, also asking would be nice.
my mum bought me a set (2 normal sets, 1 jacobs ladder, 2 fillers and poles) when I was on a private yard - all were personally designed and wild colours chosen. the owners never used them however they hired the school out. one specific person was told they were not in the hire of the arena so not to use them.

she ignored me, so i removed the cups so she couldnt use them. she then proceeded to ram the poles into the jump wings/fillers, stipping big areas of paint off them - i had to go back to the manufactuer and see if they could give me a pot of the colours to repaint them.

I had it out with her mum, she told me they were there to be used so she would use them - cheeky cow, i think not! the owners stopped them hiring the arena so they shot themselves in the foot

No, definately not being unreasonable. They're expensive and you bought them for your daughter! I would say to people that if they want to regularly use them then you would like each person to pay some money to you towards them, maybe thats a bit tight but at least then everyone kinda owns them so they may be more careful when using them if it's their own money they're wasting.
Or stick a sign up like someone else has said and say that if anyone breaks anything they WILL be paying for it!
 
thanks RLF was thinking of doing the note thing..Will try and word it so i don't come across as a moaning rat bag LOL... Don't really want to put them in me trailer as its parked qute a long way from the school but as a last resort I will..
 
A yard my friend used to be in livery at had some jumps that belonged to another livery. I seem to recall the wings were all chained together with a paddock which prevented them from being used.
 
Yes daisy that is exaclty the point!! If people were to ASK before they used them, I could then say" yes you can use them BUT, if you break anything you replace it." Reasonable I think., but no one asks.. bloody annoying.
 
I think it is a pretty sad state of affairs when you have to practically lock away your own jumps etc but I had the same problems. It started off with someone asking if they could borrow my jumps and I said yes fine, please put them back when you're done. Which I don't think is unreasonable at all. But they ended up getting left all over the place, kids were using them as climbing frames, they were regularly getting damaged and not repaired. So in the end I put them away and they are now for my ponies' use only.
 
yeah its just down right rude to use them especially as they are very expensive to buy and replace, if they asked then thats different, i would also be very annoyed if someone used my jumps and broke them (they are wood so took along time to paint) i get annoyed with myself when i damage them lol
 
I don't think you are being petty at all. It was your hard earned cash that bought them, and neither could i afford to replace them.
I would either put them away, or charge a small amount say £2 - £3 for "hire" to cover the cost of any damages etc and also, by having to pay people would treat them with respect.
 
i think they are out of order. Only problem i find with chaining (and which is why i didnt do it) was the chains would damage the paint work, wouldntve been so bad if mine were plastic ones, and the girl would probably still have tried to use them all chained up!

What about that chain that is covered with plastic? You can buy it in lengths from any hard ware store.

I used to occsionally hire the school in question (my friend's not the OP's) and I was never told the jumps were out of bounds. There was no sign to tell me they were privately owned and not for public use. I only knew because of my friend telling me, way before I'd ever hired the school.

At the time I wouldn't have been interested in jumping anyway, but I'd have been mortified to haved used them if I had assumed they came as part of the deal.
 
I'd tell everyone that uses them that unless who ever broke or unless they all rally some cash together to replace the pole and the paint to paint the pole then you will not be leaving them out for others to use...simple.

If you don't mind people using them (which is very kind of you) then they should respect the fact that any damage and wear and tear must be dealt with correctly, owning up and coughing up the money asap!
 
i see what you are saying Patches, however i did tell this girl not to use them cos I knew how bad she was at looking after things - especially her horse - long story.

Im in a very lucky situation now as I have my own place, so only me gets to use them

never thought about a plastice covered one, im sure they do differenet lengths so wouldve bene useful.
 
I would put them away in ur trailer ... evn if they are far away, least you no they are safe!
I would try to fyd out hu that was that broke the polo and at least gt an apology from thm if nt money!
 
Why don't you just remove the cups and pins and leave the poles and wings out ? If they do get used, they can't do too much damage just with trotting poles

I think that's just livery yards. Personally, being on a livery yard, I couldn't buy jumps and think I would keep them to myself. Honestly, in the first place it would have been more sensible for everyone who wants to jump to club together to buy the yard some jumps. As it is I think all you should do is buy cheap jumps and request anyone who breaks something to replace it.
 
I bought a set of 8 jumps as I needed them to practise. I am on a very basic yard and am actually the only one at present who jumps anyhow.

When I bought them up the yard owner asked if others could use them and I said as long as they were treated with respect and all breakages replaced with like, then I was happy.

Luckily they are placed right next to his house and he always knows if they have been used. So far so good, but if a breakage occurred and was not replaced I would take steps to make them unusable to others I am afraid!
 
why not ask yard owner for a reduction in your livery rate if everyone is going to use them... say, £7 a week. that's enough to replace a pole fairly regularly. tell all other liveries that if they are using them, they have to help you paint them when they need it. if they smash a wing or filler, they have to replace it.
tbh that's what livery yards are like, people are impossibly cheeky. having had saddles, clippers, and god knows what else "borrowed" in the past (including yard owner riding other people's horses without their permission!), nothing surprises me any more.
 
I totally agree, although not on livery i bought 7 jumps i have a kindof livery on my field and hes great but I said he could use my jumps, my horses rarely knock a jump his regularly lands on the jump meaning that i have 2 cracked poles and 10 really bent cups which i just cant afford to replace meaning that my jumps are wonky :$ My mum who rents the field couldnt care less which is a bit annoying so i totally know where youre coming from i would chain the wings

Well I have decided a note will go up in the tea room saying that people who wanna use my jumps need to ask me first, that way I know who's used them. Plus any damage and they must be repaired/replaced otherwise the jumps will disappear. After all no one would think of using my horse/stable/trailer/tack without asking so can't see why its different for my jumps. Thanks for all your replies..

I would definatly make people aware that they are your jumps and not the livery yards.
But I can see it from the other point that it would just be to tempting to use a set of jumps that were just there saying "please jump me". if they havent got any of their own.
But untill every one gets the idear that they are yours I would take the poles and put them in your trailer.

this is something that really annoys me...on my yard we decided to 'club' together to buy some jumps and 4 of us were interested (the rest said no) so we got about £900 worth of stuff in the end so we have a mega set of jumps, cups and fillers. the yard has about 6 crappy poles and a couple of wings (no cups)

so now all the others who hadn't wanted to contribute are wanting to jump. now i have no prob with them borrowing cups but they keep leaving them out in the rain. but i have a HUGE issue with them using our wings (very expensive) and poles which i spent all of last summer painting. my horses (and other who bought jumps) are failry careful types- the others have clumsy horses that keep chipping the paint. it really irritates me when they use them as trotting poles coz they don't put them out right striding-wise and they get trodden all over. we've asked them not to use them and to just use the yard jumps but i know they do use them sneakily when we're not there. cheeky sods- its not like we didn't ask if they wanted to contribute in the first place!
