do you find your horses eat it straight away? Patrick is on LucieBix and PuraBeet but doesn't really seem to like it. He would much rather eat hay to be honest. If I leave the bucket in all day/night it is gone the next time I come up (well mostly) but he doesn't tuck into it like he would a normal feed. This is fine whilst he is still in 24/7 but when he is turned out he will end up going without breakfast. I have tried adding their mint treats but he picks those out and still leaves the feed. Just wondered what other horses did as he is the only one on my yard on these feeds.

William ate up as normal initially but then 'went off' the feed completely. The same happened in the process, feed left for a day was eventually eaten but in the end it ws uneaten. Don't really know why as he enjoys cubes/alfa a/speedi beet!

Yes I went back to Hi Fibre cubes (D&H), either Hi Fi or Alfa A (depending on work) with Speedi beet. He gobbled it up as though I'd been starving him! I did try adding garlic, carrots etc to the Simple system feed but it wasn't enough to make him eat it up. Seems to keep weight on better now too, of course that relates to his pickiness with the SS feed!

I was in the same position - hence sacks of carrots, orchard scrumping...... I think it cost more to get the weight back on William than if I had dumped them on the muck heap!!

Mine had no problems, howev r if your were used to having feed with mollasses, which most other feed do it will probably be like having tea with no sugar (if you normaly do have it).

Mine particulalry love the lucy nuts and lucy stalks

Mine have lucie stalks and green gold chaffs. In winter they have speedibeet added. They always have carrots,

I have never known then not to lick the bowls and when Chancer had the red bag grass nuts to get him in show condition he couldn't get them down fast enough. Cairo had some too and agreed they were yummy.

That said, if mine didn't immediately eat all their grub I would be nailing down the lid.

They have also never looked and in Cairo's case ridden better since being on SS.

We've got several one it one or two weren't entirely convinced to start with but now gobble it up happily.

But they are all Spanish so perhaps more used to that kind of feed.

My old Connemara mare wouldn't touch the stuff which was a shame as it would have done her the world of good as she was sugar intollerant.

Hi Jo C, a horse is designed to trickle feed approx 23 hours a day, so surely it is a good thing that he is not bolting his feed and then standing for hours without anything going through his system!

Mine hoover it up no prob's especially the baby but he's a dustbin, never comes up for air. I think until they get used to 'plainer' food they are fussy like kids who want tomato ketchup with everything.

Alfalfa is quite bitter to taste when not 'laced' with molasses so most companies add some even if they say its not much.

I'd say if he's eaten it all by morning not to worry as it's meant to be a forage replacer and eaten slowly.

My boy was on D&H high fibre nuts, Alfa A and speedibeet. He's switched over much better than I thought he would do as he can be quite fussy at times. Still adding a teeny bit of Alfa A in to use it up but so far so good (nearly 2 weeks)

Bozzy I live fairly near you & wondered where you get your SS feed from? Do you do a bulk order or is there a local stockist that I don't know about? Sometimes all I want is the Instant Linseed but it isn't practical to order just one thing so a lcal supplier would be brilliant!

I do agree however when he starts going out again he will be missing out on breakfast and therefore will only be having half the recommended feed. Do I then give him the whole lot overnight (too much in one go surely) or just keep him on half rations. I give him his feed and he just ignores it completely most of the time. He does eat the majority overnight but there is still usually some left in the morning. Just to point out he is about right weight wise now and would be ok to lose a little but not too much.

Edited to say he has been on this since Nov and tucked in happily to start with.

Jo are you feeding the recommended amounts? I only ask because I don't - My 17'2 has 2 kg dry red nuts a day - split into 2 meals - the evening one is 1.5 kg and the morning is .5. He gets a large scoop of soaked beet added to the evening and half a scoop in the morning. He is very difficult to keep weight on - but on these quantities looks fantastic.

My 16'1 TB has 1.5 kg of luci nuts split 1 and.5 with sugar beet- and my conn x id has 1 kg lucinuts split into two feeds. These are no where near the recommended quantities. My 17.2 weighs about 650kg so could have 6.5kg of nuts - he couldn't possibly eat that much.

Simple systems feeds are forage - so you could give the full days rations in one feed in the evening and it would keep him going all night.

All the horses on my yard now have simple systems and we have found that we have to vary the amount of water in each - some like it really sloppy, some like it quite dry. So you really have to try and find the consistancy your horse likes, out of 13 horses on Simple Systems - not one leaves anything in their bowl. And not one is having anywhere near the recommended amount and all look fantastic

Now that is interesting, he is being fed the recommended amounts. I have tried sloppy and dry and it doesn't seem to make any difference. Perhaps I shall try changing the amounts, thank you.

Jo C, my lot took a while to get used to it too, but like bosworth I feed nothing LIKE the recommended amounts - they'd not fit through the gate if I did!! I add a broad spectrum balancer to my feeds to make sure they get the necessarily vitamins and minerals etc!!
As to him not eating quick enough to have his breakfast, if he's still doing that once you need to turn him out in the morning, you'd be fine to give all the feed in one big pm feed, as they don't gobble it down like many of the molasses laced feeds, so will eat in more slowly overnight and that is ideal!
All our lot look fab on the SS, I changed a few years ago and have never looked back!!

i have just started using it on my two-digby doesnt care wet/sloppy etc but hes not been used to any hard feeds at all so hes not bothered.
My othe rone wont touch it, not even the purabeet...shall see after a few days but to be honest he cant afford to lose too mcuh weight so shall have to see.
