Local village faceache group 'overweight lab found loose, collapsed on xyz road' posted at about 2pm. Then post 5 mins later, have taken to ABC vets as very distressed, likely heat stroke. 30 degrees here.
Owner posts half hour later saying it buggered off after a squirrel on their late lunchtime walk. (I know where they are, they would have had to do about half mile on pavements to get to common).
Loads pile on.... major slanging match!

Dog still at vets, will be kept in overnight, poor creature.

Mine have spent the day lying in flower beds. That’s why they’re called Border terriers!!

I love this 🤣🤣🤣

I did think it was just my dogs who did the “lying in the flower bed” thing - I’ve spent the day putting them in the paddling pool, to say Flora loves water she won’t go in whereas dear Colin is far more practical and knows he can cool off in there ❤️

Yeah, it gets very hot where I live, so we do short walks very early in the morning in a shaded area. Our walks are shorter this time if year, unless we get more bearable weather.

The dogs are still out in the garden and have small pool to cool of in. Seems good enough for them.

I used to take the Lab swimming weekly, but there aren't as many close and/or dog friendly spots here.

Swimming early in the morning was a great way to keep her fit and not too hot.

Our two had an early walk for 45 minutes in the woods in the shade. We are lucky as we have soft sandy paths straight out of the front gate and the woods are 100 yards further on. They are very annoying with no walking. The rest of the day has been spent moving around the garden in and out of the sun and then lying on the wood floor indoors to cool off. They are off lead all the time on their walk so they set the pace and simply head for home if they've had enough heat/rain/snow. They were home by about 9.30 yesterday and today and won't have an evening walk as it is sooo hot out there now. However they have the garden all evening and will chase mice and squirrels until bedtime. I have seen some (especially big dogs) being walked from their houses some distance to the common and woods at 11am and later. They look hot and the pavement must be uncomfortable for them.

0430 is the perfect time to walk your dogs! Maybe I am too geeky/nerdy/sad.....or whatever....but that's when I've been out with my mutts all this week. Haven't seen another single soul out and about though...rest of the day the guys are confined to the paddock/pond at home.

PS Walking at that time helps reconfirm steadiness to deer though! :)

My lad hasn't had a walk but he has free run of the garden and farm as long as I am with him, doing one job or another. Today he lay in the shade whilst I was outside or played bitey face with our young sheepdog. That will be enough for him, absolutely no need for a 'walk' in this heat!

Goose went out in shaded woodland this morning, has had the choice of being inside or in the garden since. The sitting room is cool, curtains closed, conservatory open. He’s restless because he’s not had a good run and can’t play with his brother. The temperature is apparently 28 currently.

Mine get walked by the river and the younger 2 love to swim so they get plenty of exercise without getting over hot , I am usually home before 8 and I don’t walk them again till the next morning , I try to go at 6.30 but it ends up being 7

It's been 27/28C here so mine have just been up the field before 8am then asleep in the shade for the rest of the day with a paddling pool to cool off in. I went for a walk (no dogs!) after 9am yesterday and it was so hot already but saw the normal amount of dogs out in the park, all panting and walking slowly. Never surprises me how stupid people are.

Very early starts for us, but it's pretty usual tbh. I love going out before the rest of the world wakes up.

That said, unless I know that someone has walked a long distance with their dog, I try not to pass judgement. There are blocks of flats local with no gardens so those dogs will need to do a short toilet walk and there is simply no way of knowing if someone intends to only be out 3 minutes or if they are going for an actual walk.

A classic case of "Where it ain't, you can't find it". One of my dear late mother's sayings.

I had to cut through the park yesterday lunchtime and there was someone with a ball chucker happily throwing ball after ball for a Lab. It’s crazy. Also crazy the number of people who think it’s ok to drag their dog to a cafe and have it sit / lie on the hot pavement in full sun while they enjoy their iced drink.

Our 78kg mostly black Dane was only walked (never on tarmac) at or below 20C, when we had typical East Anglian heatwaves he'd be walked VERY early or not at all. He had a cooling jacket but that was for emergencies only, never to be relied on.

My malamutes were 18 or below if bright sun or 20 if a bit of a breeze, I won't walk clients dogs when it gets to 24, kills my income 😒

We preferred 16 and below, but we have plenty of nights where the temps are above 20 pretty early, and would choose the walks to have him in the shade. He would drink from a squeezy squirty water bottle which helped, we'd also douse him around his neck and back. Super careful!

Gazebo up for shade , paddling pool full of water, summerhouse open and what do the idiots do……run around in the sun playing chase me Charlie. Who would have black retrievers. I had to make them rest in the shade and wear their cool coats

I take mine early morning and late evening and go along the rife at the bottom of the farm so they can just hop in and out and cool off. If i'm doing jobs they just hang ou in the shade, I'm still seeing lots of idiots out at lunchtime with ball chuckers though, those owners need to have the ball chucker shoved somewhere don't they?
