People who don't work - a mini-rant

If your YO allows someone to book it at the same time 3 times a week for the rest of the year, my issue would be with them, not the person who has booked it tbh.....

How they spend their days is up to them!!!

You have the opposite to me.

At our yard, all the DIYers are mostly the non workers, and the full and part livery people all have jobs (me). I start work mid morning, but finish too late to go up to the yard after work usually, so I ride in the mornings and often have all the facilities all to myself, which is fab :D

Everyone is very nice at my yard, but I do get slightly stressed when I'm rushing to groom and tack up and give my horse a decent amount of work before I have to start work myself, and the lovely people who have no time restraints chat away to me constantly. At the weekends I don't mind, but on week-day mornings I just want it to be me and my horse as every minute is precious!

i think you should speak to your yard manager about the booking of the arena 3x per week for the rest of the year i would be pretty fed up with that.

i do not work and i am lucky enough that as soon as i drop my kids off i go to my yard muck out and then ride.

Meh - I'm just jealous of anyone who doesn't have to work and can afford a horse:mad::p

Mind you, if I was in that position, I'd never be full livery. I think enjoy looking after my horses just as much as I enjoy riding them:D Plus - I am a control freak - no yard could ever do it properly:D

Definately have a word with the YO as I am assuming that when someone books the school it means no one else can use it? if that is the case, have a quick straw poll and see who else it impacts and then ask your YO if you can have a "no booking" time (say 6 - 8) to allow the majority it get in and ride. We rarely have problems - sometimes too many but not normally. Only ever once had someone wanting to jump when I wanted to ride but she understood that I was also going into work around at the same time - no reason why I had to wait for her to finish when I also wanted to get home! weekends are different - school gets booked for lessons and all work around it!

A yard meeting and no-booking rule would be heaven! Unfortunately YO has explained that the yard is a business and needs to make money. Money talks, doesn't it, so if you want to spend £30 / week on school bookings nobody is going to turn you down.

Anyway, I love the yard (apart from minor inconveniences) so am not moving anywhere. A rant is just sometimes good to get things off one's chest!

I'm one of the annoying people who rides in rush hour as I want my horse to have as much turnout time as possible!

Actually, that is a good point. I do sometimes feel bad because when I'm getting ready to ride, all of the others are being turned out, so my horse has about 2 hours less turnout per day compared to the others, but there is good grass coverage in his paddock and I'm sure he makes up for lost time once he's out.

Gosh, you and me both! Well if I were in these ladies position I think I would rather ride during the day when it was quieter, but that's just me :D

It could be worse - I used to be on a yard full of students from the local equine college, and they NEVER rode during the day despite the fact they never seemed to go to lectures/do any work :p:D:D:D

I still dont understand why they always rode in the evening when us poor stressed working-full-time DIYers wanted to ride :D

I don't work but do usually use the school in the day and not in the evenings, with the young lad though I have recently started riding at 6 ish when others are around and using the school to get him used to a louder/busier working environment and working around other horses. Only a couple of times a week though...I'm not sure anyone on my yard finds that a problem (now he isnt dangerous to be in the same school as! :p), I would be quite hurt if they did!

Exactly!!!!

Which leads me to think they don't necessarily fall into the same category of horse owner as us!!!!!

dare I say the words...... status symbol....... *takes cover* :p ;) :D

I had two horses in livery winter 08/09, solely because i wanted to go showjumping, and dont have the facility at home. I work two days a week, as I'm a single mum, and in ireland, they punish you for wanting to get off your a** ang go out to work, so 2 days is all i can do with losing a fortune. I work tuesday and thursday, so on the other days i'd ride in the mornings, as soon as my children went to school, and ride at 6 on tuesdays and thursdays. You could never know who was going to be where, there was such a mixture of people, but the guy that owned the yard was very easy going, and lived, ate and breathed horses, so he would often still be in the yard at 11p.m. schooling his own, as the arena would have been busy during the day.
I do understand what you are getting at though, and i think, if you are free during the day, then ride during the day, so that the school is free for those who are at work all day. He used to hire the arena to the local hunt twice a week in the evenings, so on those evenings. it was mental. It's a difficult one, because obviously, when everyone gets along, it's much easier, but it's very frustrating when people dont help that out!!!!

I have to admit I do find people that sit at the yard all day doing nothing then want to ride in the school as soon as someone else starts tacking up irritating because unless they have a reason they want to ride when someone else is they are just being inconsiderate to others.

On the whole this rarely happens at the yard I'm at :D

I used to have this exact same problem on my old yard, and when I asked why they wait to ride when the yard is at its busiest, I was told they like to ride in front of an audience. Honestly.

I don't work full time, but am at university. Luckily on a private yard, but I go up and ride in late afternoon/early evening, as I am busy in the day with essays/revision and going to the stables is my way to relax or have a break between day and night revision sessions. Yes I have the option to go up at any point of the day, but I choose to do it once I've done the bulk of uni work for that day :)

I don't see the problem- just because people don't work doesn't mean that they aren't busy...

I am currently out of work due to my Bipolar disorder and I find some of the comments in this thread rather spiteful :( I don't lunch, sit around all day, route through peoples feedrooms or do diddly squat!! While I am as mad as the rest of you about people who swindle the benefits system please do not assume we all are.

That being said I do like 'having the yard to myself' in the day! I love the peace and quiet and love that I don't have to fight for the school. I do think that it would be spiteful for me to ride after work hours as like people have said I have all day to ride. I know I have the right to book it anytime but I think it would be just nasty for me to do so.

I catch up with my friends in the evenings when I bring mine in or on weekends.
