Following on from weezy's post, I know that you said that tongue in cheek- ' I lost a few more brain cells ' but, in all seriousness do you feel that you have 'lost brain cells' as a result of many falls??

I do feel that my memory and brain is not the same as it was and there are some things that I really struggle with, which I just know werent a problem for me before.

Does anyone feel the same?

I've been knocked uncouncious 3 times since a 7 year old, and each time when I came round I had severe memory loss to the point where I thought I had gone back in time 2 years

and have also had many more heavy falls over the time span of the last 17 years. I remember when I was younger I had an amazing memory recall and could remember everything no problems- where as now, I seriously struggle to remember simple SJ courses and am completly flummoxed if i have to remember a jump off route after that.
Just niggly things like that. Also remembering peoples faces and peoples names, so many times over the years I've met people in the street that have claimed to have been in the class above me or below me at school. They would remember everything about me yet I will not even remember their name!! Also someone will tell me a simple set of instructions, and I will get it all completly muddled up and not understand. ( thick, I know !! )

It may just be me and it may be I just have a poor memory recall and I dont 'exercise' my brain enough now or maybe old age is setting in for me already

.. but still. Just wondering if anyone has noticed the same sort of thing with permanent memory loss after having falls?

Never have children, it will get a whole lot worse!

I have only been knocked unconcious once and I cannot say that it changed me in any way that I am aware of. I have a useless memory now though and do try to do lots of brain training to help (it doesn't).

I don't think that having falls/being knocked unconscious has had much effect on me...I've had quite a few falls, but don't feel any different.
Perhaps it's senility?

PMSL! Totally know where you're coming from there ... why does that happen???

I had complete memory loss after a bad fall - couldn't remember anything - still very foggy for me - I think my only memory of the accident is actually a false memory from watching the video of it!

Can't say that it lost me brain cells though - didn't really notice - not noticeable like preg/child birth which DEF makes you lose them in shed-loads!!!

I've had concussion a few times but only been knocked out once, last summer. I had memory loss at the time which hasn't come back like I thought it would - I came off and was apparantly knocked out for a good few minutes, came around, caught my horse and led him up a steep hill (out hacking) then got back on, then started getting hysterical because I didn't know what day it was, where I was etc - all I knew was that I was meant to be driving down to Sussex for showjumping that evening! So I got off the horse and the lady I was with called an ambulance and I went to hospital, was really ill in the ambulance but went home in the afternoon. Was so scary though and the only thing I remember now is walking to the ambulance, nothing about getting back on the horse, and I never made it to showjumping that evening!

My brain seems to work okay but something *has* happened that's worrying me...

I've prob had mild-ish concussion 4 or 5 times in my riding career... once with Cat he fell over on top of me sj & I really whacked my head. I had v slightly blurred vision for a couple of hours - only peripheral, not all of it - but when I did it I had a really splitting pain down the middle of my head.

Then he did the same thing again at home a couple of years later & although I didn't bang my head anywhere near as hard, I still got the splitting pain. Both times, it went away v quickly, but I'm a bit worried that I might have knocked something loose...

The faculties seem to be in full working order, so hopefully not serious...

Hopefully for me (touch wood) having a bad fall and resulting memory loss has not affected my memory. Though I am totally useless with faces, takes me a very long time to learn and face and then match it to a name, but I think thats just me being a bit dim. Had concussion twice, once I was just knocked out for a minute or so, next time lost a weeks memory, cannot remember a thing until the day after the accident, and don't still recall the week before the accident (luckily, it was when I was 17 and had just failed my driving test).

Hey, when i was 8, I had back flipped into swimming pool that cracked my head up at the top and required 18 stitches.... concussion aswell, A boy knocked me out at the temple at school i was out for couple of hours, I used to play rugby and get head banged against gaint women (i am no gaint u know!) fallen off the race horses alot of times and some of it was pretty bad had fair amount of knocked helmets.

I used to have brilliant memory! I used to memorised the dressage paces with my eyes closed and did them correctly! same goes for show jumping.....

Today 10 years later..... i have a memory of a goldfish! And u know that operation i am gonna have.... they may find that i have nothing in my head!! lol!

So i guess memory loss comes with age!

Good luck with owen... When is the vetting?

I had a bad riding accident 4 years ago, when a Arab spooked and we both went backwards. Unfortunately my head landed on a pile of rocks and it caused brain damage. The horse was fine, I acted as a nice squishy cushion!

After the accident I coudn't remember who I was, that my father had died many years before, thought my grandparents where still alive and didn't recognise my brother. I still have gaps in my memory at certain ages. I also couldn't remember how to ride. So 2 years after the accident I learnt how to ride again. It was like I had never sat on a horse and went back to being a complete beginner. Felt very strange considering I've got pictures of me as a child at local hunt meets. I just wonder if the riding is just a pyschological/fear issue I have. I also had to re-learn how to play the harp and piano again!

I have a terrible memory, doesn't help that the accident caused me to develop epilepsy. It's peoples names I can't get, even my closest friends (and my current horse lol).

If it wasn't for my hat I doubt I would be here today!

Loss of consciousness is generally the sign of a moderate brain injury. Depending on what side of the head you hit, this can damage the area linked to memory. It is therefore quite likely that several bad falls and periods of unconsiousness are linked with your bad memory.
