Im just interested to know how your mare changed when she was in foal?

Ive noticed a massive change in Blossom's behaviour already, and shes only 28days in. She gets grumpy if im in the stable when shes eating - i used to be able to groom her whilst she ate, pick out her feet etc, change rugs. Now she pulls faces. She dosent bite or anything, but is just grumpy!

Riding wise shes turned into psycho horse, and spends her time trying to go everywhere at top speed whilst throwing in the odd buck(thats out hacking) Schooling shes the same as normal

I lunged her on monday and she proceeded to drag me around the arena bucking like a horse possessed, it took all my strength to wind her in and get her to stand still. I then had to walk her round in hand for 30mins instead

Now before anyone starts banging on at me about seeing my vet, he is perfectly aware that shes had this massive change in behaviour and has told me its common place in some mares in the early stages and that she wil calm down eventually

(And i am seeing him again tonight as shes got another scan, so will be mentioning it again to him.)

Im just interested in what other peoples mares where like? It seems Bloss has found a new lease of life

mine is now 35 days in foal and she has not changed at all. apart from throwing her first shoe in 18 months of me having her. had my scan tuesday and the foal is just over 1inch with a good strong heartbeat. i am sooooo excited

I didn't ride storm when she was in foal........I just put her in a field, left her there and checked on her 2/3 times a day but she seemed more chilled out if anything. She did jump the electric fence more though (especially when she was 10 1/2 months gone and was the size of a hippo!

I hope the scan goes okay today!

Thanx! Blossy needs to keep up with exercise as she can get large rather quickly and the vet is said shes to get no larger and that she still has to have regular exercise! I guess shes just enjoying being pregnant far too much!

Mine is normally quite an active forward going mare but when she was in foal (she gave birth in april) she spent the whole time asleep! even in the field she would find a quiet corner and go to sleep, no kicking the door in the mornings to go out, no jumping the electric fence, now she has had him she is getting more lively and will even have a trot round the field with him!

My mare has been a little grumpy she is 21 days now i have my second scan next friday !!! she does live out though !!

my current mare due to foal in a week !!!!! eeek didnt change at all i thought i had lost the foal at the 30 days scan after her having twins etc we then proceeded to carry on riding her and not till 4 months down the line did i get the vet to do a blood test !!

i must say though my mare isnt mareish at all and never has been the only thing she did was hump her back everytime i got on i though she was being naughty but when i found out she was in foal it must of been this as she had never done that before !!!

My mare didnt change too much. The only thing was that she made it quite clear it was uncomfortable to be ridden. I had planned to ride her for as long as poss but after a month or so she got very grumpy when the saddle was put on and when hacking out she was really ploddy and not happy. I listened to her and just left her alone for the rest of the pregnancy.

the first time round i didnt ride her at all as they say if the mare stresses in the first 3 months she could lose the foal but as i thought she had lost it i found out at 4 months and then realised why she was being like she was and she hasnt been ridden since !!!

i know have a week to go !!!

Personality wise Teazle is also grumpy at meal times, just pulls her ears back, nothing nasty. However, she is also a lot happier and likes her fuss now, which she never did.

Bramble is just a sweetheart and will stand for hours dozing while i groom her and just stroke her, awwwww.

Both were worked, ridden and driven, for the first 4/5 months and they were no different in their work.

best of luck for the scan tonight

Mine didn't really change at all apart from making it perfectly clear that she wasn't going to stand for being ridden - she's a proven broodmare and has never been keen on being ridden anyway, it's always been under sufferance.

She has been grumpy with the other horses and during the last few months only a couple have been allowed within arms length of her, she has chased the rest away.

So we've basically just left her to it in a field and we are due a foal now - already been on foal watch for a week.

Blossy has never been hormonal or any different when shes been in season. I guess now shes pregnant its different hormones!

Shes in a field on her own anyways as she hates other horses

No idea hun! Can't help sorry but thought I'd post to ask how both of your lovely neddies are getting on?! Hope you are all well, haven't been on here in a while so sorry if I've missed loads!!!!!!!!

Cloud was totally the same almost the whole way through her pregnancy to be honest. We worked her all the way through but once we got to about 2 months before foaling she wouldn't want to go out some days, but others she was dying to get out; so if she wanted to go out we would take her but if she didn't then we just put her back in her field - we tried to be sympathetic to, and accommodate, her daily whims.

At about 4 weeks before foaling daughter stopped riding her as we didn't have a girth to fit anymore and she started to really fill out then. I did still take her out for walks then though - however she became very ansty if she couldn't see her herd - this is something that Cloud has NEVER done in her whole life!

At about 2 weeks before foaling, Cloud would be very friendly one day and then the next didn't want anything to do with me.....again very out of character for her.

I honestly wouldn't worry - they DO change when they are pregnant and they all have their own individual way of dealing with the changes that are occurring within them. Bloss will be fine I'm sure.

i kept an online log for pig
first she went a bit neurotic and i just couldnt ride her.she was anxious and spooky for a month
then she calmed down gradually and started to get really really soppy and loved any attention and scratches(usually she hates being groomed)
she then had mood swings nearer foaling where she would either be all over me or wanting to be left alone!

How exciting

Hannah was really affectionate when she was pregnant. Usually she is not really interested in cuddles and scratches, but when she was in foal she was really begging for attention. It created quite a nice bond between us

She really wanted to be worked too, which is why she was worked all the way through to 6 months of being in foal. Then she had had enough, made it very clear to me that was the way she was feeling, so I just lightly hacked her for a few weeks then let her be a mum.

Is it your scan tonight?
