Does anyone have any experience of this?

My friend has her horse advertised and someone came to see her who offered to take the horse away for 8 weeks, work on her and sell her for 15% of the total sale price.

If she doesn't sell within the 8 weeks, my friend can either take her back or leave her with this woman at a cost of £240 per week until she does sell.

She's really considering this option as she hasn't had a lot of interest in the horse, but neither of us know of anyone who has taken this route to selling their horse, nor have we heard of the woman who is from Stafford area. My friend said she seemed very nice, and says she isn't a dealer, just has 3 or 4 horses at a time and sells them on for people. She has been told she can go to see the horse any time she likes while this person has got her.

I would really appreciate anyone's experience, and of this lady in particular, if anyone knows who she is. (I know her name but don't know if I'm allowed to post it?)

Thanks.

hmm, I'd be wary. Anyone who has to drum up buisness like this... well I'd question their lack of reputation.

You could easily pay someone 10 pounds an hour to work on the horse and sell it yourself if it needed work.

I met a couple of people like this whilst I was pony buying and I ran a mile. Horses kept in bad conditions, trying to sell horses which were dangerous.

Personally I'd say no. there are plenty of proffessional people who do this and their reputation speaks for itself, ie they don't have to visit people and offer to take the horse, people go to THEM.

Plus... 240 pounds a week!!!! What does the horse need? Re-breaking and 24 hour care!!!

Whatever your friend decides is her business but a word of warning. Make absolutely certain this £240 per week doesnt start from day 1. It has happened to people that I know, when they have gone to pick the horse up as it hasnt sold they are presented with a large bill. No horse until paid.
Be careful.

Most people who do ythis charge livery and then take 10% of sale price. Generally they seem quite succesful but I cartainly wouldn't be sending a horse off to someone you don't know personnally or by reputation.

surely you would be better of reducing the price and try and sell it yourself. i know there is a couple down here that charge approx £120+ a week then 10% of the sale value.

How long has your friend had her horse advertised? Where has she had it advertised & also take a look at the wording &/or photos on the advert.

Sending yor horse to a selling livery, specially without really knowing anything about them, can be a disaster. Either way the selling livery will make money wether they sell th horse or not. £240 p.w for their services wether they sell or not & 15% of the selling price is a substantial amount.

I think you should think long & hard about his....you can pay for alot of advertsing for what they are charging. I would only go there as a last resort/ desperate to sell.

Re word your advert, use better pictures that show the horse off better & place the advert somewhere else...good luck

She's going to do that - neither the wording or the photo's she used did the horse any justice, so that is her priority.

Thanks for your replies - some very sensible comments which made me think that maybe my friend's grasping at straws when there's no need to just yet.

My sister has sold a few horses for people but it is from people she knew who didn't have the time to sell there own horse.

My son does this and he never approaches people - they always approach him - and he does not charge 240 a week!!!! When he was at university we sent one of our horses to a professional rider to sell and she charged £120 per week plus 10% of the sale price.

I would be very wary of anyone asking to do this as most people work on word of mouth.
