I just found out today that someone on the yard works with the police horses taining them, riding them etc... and i was wondering how you would get a job like this? join the police mounted division, work for the yard that keeps the police horses?

I envy anyone who has a job like this, i think it would be fab! :D

I'm not sure if they have civvy grooms, but I don't believe you can apply to the mounted division, you have to be a regular bobby for several years first. I might be wrong though, why not ask the person on your yard.

Ive always been interested in this. Years ago I looked in to it and iirc they prefer it if you can't ride so they can train you to ride their way. To be a groom, you need to have at least stage 3 I think? As I say, this was quite a while ago so it might have changed since then!

They do have civvy grooms. Stage 3 care usually a requirement, as is shift work. There's not often much riding involved. Jobs are usually advertised in H&H but don't come up very often.

My friend has worked for the mounteds for years, she applied through police website as she had done work experience with them. She has no quals, gets to ride them quite a bit and goes to all the big events to groom. She works very hard and does long shifts, they recently put her through her hgv and i think they offer to pay for quals as well.

I am proud to say that my daughter is it a mounted police officer after nine years in the Met. She loves her job which is really challenging and interesting. Yes the yards do have "civvy" grooms but the ones at my daughters stables dont get riding. However police horses have to be the smartest, cleanest horses I have ever seen and the grooms and officers care deeply for their charges. Good luck with your quest!

A friend of mine is a groom for Greater Manchester mounted section and aboslutely loves it. She does some riding although, not much which is a shame because she's a good rider. She was never a police office and I understand they insist on BHS qualifications.
