People with 2 (or more) horses?

I have three horses currently, on DIY.
I work one full time job, and two part time contracts (flexible hours but 11 hrs per week).
It is do-able, but I never have a minute in the day spare - always have to plan ahead, try to juggle different priorities, etc, which has been difficult recently with personal circumstances.

RubysGold - it's hard work having 2 horses. Really hard work, especially if you want to keep them both in work.

I asked a similar question on here a couple of years ago before I bought my second one, and got very similar replies to you - it's not that much more work having 2 etc etc, but I find that doing 2 on my own is much harder than 1! Would I still have bought a second horse knowing what I know now? Probably not if I'm honest.

You say you wouldn't get a sharer for Roo - would you consider it for the new one?
 
I have two both kept at the same place.My mare i am starting to break to harness and my gelding is just about to come back into work after a holiday.I work part time and i am married (but hubby is hardly ever here as is a European truck driver).My philosophy is if i have to go out in the middle of winter when it is pizzling down to do one horse i just as well get soaked doing two.I am also toying with the idea of getting number three.
 
I have two but cheat and have one on loan to a friend, they are still on the same yard so it makes life that much easier (also on part livery too) :)
 
I have three horses, all kept at home. I find it’s a complete bind and feel sorry for my OH as everything revolves around my hairy bairns. Although he doesn’t mind, I do, as I have to plan ahead and feel restricted.

When I was at livery I had one horse, it was bliss, I went up every morning did what I had to do and came home to do normal family stuff. When ever I went away anywhere my close friend would look after my horse and I hers. Life was simple and balanced. Lots of time for riding and lots of time with my husband.

When we moved to France I bought two ponies to keep my boy company but it really is more work than I wanted. Ideally 2 horses would work well for me and give me the time to enjoy life other than horses.

Would I do it again? No, If I could turn the clock back I would have stuck to one horse at livery and enjoyed all the perks that come with it.
 
I have a mother and son Owned the mother for 10 years son is coming up to 1 in July

I can see in her face every morning now it's not "get to me, get to me quick" its " Don't you dare go to him first"

I have a job and a live-in lover (read he does the loving I do everything else around the house) and cope fine, I think its more about the finances than anything actually doing 2 a day doesn't take up that much more time. apart from the riding that is
 
I have two and older horse who for due to his arthritus is being managed differently and I cant really jump him as often as I would like so enter my mare who is a jumping machine :D

I do different things with both of them and I compete both of them in different things so it doesnt clash :)

i dont feel as though my older on gets any less attention than she does :D
 
I have 3, all on same yard. I also have a full time job and a husband.

One is retired, one is in full work ridden by me and the third is ridden by me at weekends and by my friend in the week.

It is hard work but it's also very rewarding. I didn't make the decision to take the third one on lightly but circumstances came together to make it possible and do-able and I'll manage. Weekdays are tough but since I spend all day sat at a computer I actually quite enjoy the physical side of looking after the horses in the evening. I'm lucky I don't have to do mornings (though do get up at 6 to walk the dogs before work...).

I think it depends on the horses. I couldn't cope with 3 "delicate" TBs over winter but all three of mine are fairly hardy and at least one will winter out and the other 2 hopefully will but I've taken into account that they may not.

I'm also lucky to have a very supportive husband and an amazing YO and friend.
 
I have two at the same place. I get off work early in the afternoon so I have the time but it is a lot of work. My mare is a work in progress so requires a good deal of time and planning. The gelding is easier but still requires cleaning and regular riding and exercise.

I could not do it if they were at separate places - just the driving time in between would add too much. If you do it, I would find a way to keep them at the same place. But it's certainly doable.
 
Although i don't want to put a dampner (sp?) on your plans i really, really struggled with two.

It is a lot of work and i struggled with the motivation to exercise both and found one always took priority. Very pleased to say i only have the one now!
 
I have 3 at one yard and totally agree with everyone else in terms of how difficult it will be across 2 yards. OH rides 1 of them most of the time but I still work her a couple of times a week as he sees schooling as "boring"!!

Everyone is different but if I'm honest there are times when I have to be really strict with myself to make sure I give enough time to each of them - particularly if work is busy.

You clearly adore your girl and have said you wouldn;t consider a share on her. Someone else suggested sharing your 2nd horse but would you consider being the sharer? That way you can see how you get on with 2 whilst not having the full responsibility if you found it didn't work out as you hope.
 
I would consider sharing the 2nd one :) But only after watching them ride a few times. If I want to compete, I need to make sure any sharer wont do something I dont like.
Would consider sharing or loaning, but its finding one :/ I suppose I could look round the tack shops going into winter when people are starting to struggle.
 
I had 2 last year and kept them at different yards. the only way it worked though was that one wasnt ridden- was a 2 year old and i kept him just down the road from my house whereas my ridden mare was 10-15mins away.
Moved my youngster to mares yard when ready to be backed and we were up there for a long time and it did take a while doing 2 and the older mare didnt get as much work as before.
Now I have 3 and they are all at home and I have enough time to give them all plenty of attention but my mum can still do house work, cook and things to keep my dad happy :P Have to say, don't think i could go back to having 1 again. Riding my youngster is the only thing keeping me sane after riding my crazy tb mare lol
