How many of you insure for the full value of your horse?! And who do you insure with?! Do you insure for Loss of use etc? I've just got my reknewal through which is reasonable, but some of the quotes I have had elsewhere are unbelievable! I just wander how much people insure for?

We insured baggage for LOU.....bloody good job we did as well as we had over £20k of vets vills and they paid up pronto - NFU, bloody marvellous!

In hindsight we should have shot her, but there you go!

Frankie is insured for 5k, to cover vets bills really. Might put it up to 6 or 7 this year, never have loss of use its just so expensive. We were with Petplan and I cant remember who we have changed to!

I had my eventer insured for 2k to keep premiums down as i just wanted the vets fees. He was worth and sold for 5 times that but was covered for 5k of vets fees and 2k on tack! Im with nfu and youngster starting his competitive eventing career this year is insured in the same way!!! I pay £about 24quid a month for horse, but do have all insured with nfu eg.... lorry, car, dogs!!!

My eventer/huntier is insured for £2k. wanted vets fees and public liability.
he's not insured for loss of use as many insurance companies can get out of this if you can still hack your horse up the road - even if that is all you can do. also Loss of use adds a lot to the policy cost.

My eventer is insured for about £3500 which I have just reduced it to from £4500, to reduce my premium, he is worth or was worth more in the region of £8000 when i got him 4 years ago but its just too expensive, I just insure for loss of animal and vets fees, so long as if I lost him I could afford a nice youngster I'd be happy! I insure with NFU and they are really good everytime I have had to claim

I insure mine for about £3k I think, he is worth more but I only want it for vets fees and public liability etc, never have LOU as 9 times out of ten they will try and get out of it and its too expensive - you are better off putting the difference in a bank account each month and if/when anything does happen you have a nice amount saved to buy a replacement and you can control what happens to your horse, not the insurance company.
My premium for him and trailer with pet plan is about £60 a month, I claimed last year so it increased at time of renewal

I have had about £15,000 back from Petplan in vets fees and on horse value over the last few years so there's no way I could have saved that up in a bank account putting away the equivalent of a premium each month.

I have had horses insured for LOU in the past (and had full payouts on it) and had the insured value increased on a couple of horses as I usually buy them as cheap youngsters and they inevitably become worth rather more than the purchase price.

My current horse is insured for just under £3000. He is worth

????? I haven't a clue but I would guess >£10000. There is no way I could afford to increase his insured value to this, though if times get better £5000 would seem like a good compromise.

Incidentally his cover does not include eventing above Novice so I shall have to update that or any claim might be invalidated.

Bailey is insured for what I paid for him because God forbid anything happened to him which resulted in him being PTS I could'nt afford to replace him without that money.

He is not insured for LOU as it puts the premiums through the roof and the chances of the insurance co actually paying out is slim.

Chess is insured for the minimum amount (which I think is about £750) as I only use the insurance for vets bills and third party cover and should anything ever happen to her I wouldnt need her full value back as I wouldnt replace her (she is a retired field ornament)

Both of mine including Sarnie is insured for 5K and not loss of use. Couldn't afford to insure for what they are worth just purchase price. At least both if injured could become brood mares and probably have that value as a brood mare.

mine is insured for the price we paid for him, and not loss of use, far too expensive, with NFU
my last mare had excessive vets bills due to a stay in hospital and NFU were great at paying up

mine is insured for half his value and no LOU anymore... got too expensive and as i have youngsters as well wouldnt buy another horse to replace him if something happened

I have insured mine for £8k although IMO he's worth a lot more. But I couldnt afford the fees! I went with NFU who were the cheapest and people recommended them. I insure for vet fees, loss of use and loss of horse.

Songs insured for 5K and buster and gogs for 3K each. Song would be worth nearere 20k i have been told but couldnt afford that and ist mainly for vets fees and we have had our shares these past 2 years!! All with NFU who are very speedy at paying up!!

I insure mine for loss of use and vets fees - I have had £10 000 back from nfu in vets fees in the past 3 years. My pony in my siggy is only insured for 3 000 atm so might change that this time round depending on the difference in premiums.

Mine too is only insure for 4k for vet fees cover with NFU, to keep premiums as low as poss with vets fees. However would never be able to replace him for 4k, he's prob worth 4x that!

I only insure Woody for £1k, no loss of use, only vets fees.

I figure that loss of use is so difficult to proove and they always worm out of it.

And I would save up the money for a new young horse in no time (i.e- a £800 exracehorse which is more than good enough!!

Horse I competed last season was insured for 4.5 k,ish and LOU.
So gald he was insured for LOU because he got lymphengitus so we could claim, with the amount of money we spent I'm glad. He probably wont get to do Novice BE again but may do some PN.
