My sensible side tells me to buy a Santa Fe of course but I've always wanted a Fourtrak. They're pretty badass lets be honest! I'd have to pay about the same for either I think although obviously the fourtrak will be much older. Like I say, perhaps not the most sensible choice but whilst I'm looking I might as well ask.

What kind of mileage do you get on a longish run if you drive carefully? And how easy do you find it to get parts and find someone to fix it for you?

Cant help with the mileage issue, but would recommend the Fourtrak!
The parts can be sourced over the web, there is a good radiator supplier in South Wales, great service.
There is a Forum, you could join.Daihatsu drivers.
I would buy this motor over and over again, when the going gets tough and you need a trailer to go through mud and parking at shows, in my opinion, there is no comparison.
I would have another like a shot.

They're pretty awesome things aren't they? OH isn't convinced as yet (well, he is about Fourtraks, less so about my willingness to fuel one and drive one on a decent commute!) but I'm working on him. :D

I'll be intrested to know what the mileage is like. I'm on the look out for a small 4x4, mostly to use at weekends and in bad weather or for my oh to use and abuse. We currently have some sort of SJ thing that its the best thing since sliced bread off road according to my oh and gets us around but it is the most god awful thing to drive! Even getting in and out is a pain as it has bucket seats. Can you tell i dont like it? :D
My OH wants to get a 90 but they are not cheap and i cant find anything in our budget but fourtraks and Sportraks have popped up and i have heard they are really good. OH is a little worried about getting bits for them but as he is a mechanic he can source most things.
Im just wondering if they are fairly economical if it is worth getting one so i stop wrecking my car up and down the lane at my yard, its starting to look like a off road sports car its got so much mud on it :p

I love my RAV-4... sadly I'm selling it though! I doubt you'd get a very good mileage on anything of that sort, would you?

Good compared to my Fiesta, definitely not. But good compared to other 4x4s? I don't know. I have heard Shoguns are ferociously thirsty which is why I'm not considering those.

The Santa Fe is pretty economical (as in a diesel one actually does better mpg than my 1.4 Fiesta on a motorway run ) which is why it is a sensible choice. I would really only unbend my sensible motives for the absolute coolness of the Fourtrak. lol

i put £20 a week in mine, to run to the pony and back twice a day and of in town once twice a week... i think it dose about 20-25 mpg.? ..

i used to get around 35 miles out of a tenner, this was doing a bit of city driving then twisty up hill roads, onto country lanes.

My OH is currently using mine as an emergency vehicle to get to and from work, 50 miles round trip and the fuel cost is killing him, he reckons it is using about £15 per day.

I really love mine, it is the short wheel base version M reg, it is great fun to drive and can shift when I need it to (turbo kicks in) but that uses even more fuel!

Mine is kept as a towing vehicle and I have a golf for everyday driving!

depending on how you drive, you will get something like 20 to 25 with a deisel. I have had several of them and only stopped buying them as tow vehicles when we found it hard to find a tidy one. The only one's we could see were fairly rusty. They are great tow vehicles and got me out of all sorts of wet fields. Mechanics like them because they are basic to work on and parts should not be a problem.

I have just been to wales for a weekend and it seems all the old fourtraks live there !
