Hi all,

My brother has a traditional cob with beautiful feathers and long mane etc. we have recently had 2 horses with mites move onto the yard and he is panicking about his girly contracting them, they are in different fields and different stable blocks, we were just wondering how contagious they are and whether there were any precautions he needed to be taking?

Thank you lovely hhoer's!!

what do you mean as in mites such as in the feathers ect ect i have a show cob who gets mites every year around this time and its always a vet job for the injection he,l chew his own legs off they pick them up off the field so my vet says around this time of year the weather turns and they look for some were nice and warm so heavy horses are ideal they have greasy skin around the legs and in the hairy horses case plenty of feather also so if the other 2 do have mites its not always the case theyr going to pass them on they can pick them up off the land they burrow into the skin so injections have always been my way iv used everything and nothing works as well as them iv used frontline ect ect and straw bedding is also a big no and thats my vets say so but myn has clipped out legs hemp bedding and i also use cream to control the itch once they get mites there is no cure its a case you just have to manage it and winter is when you see them stamping .

Thank you peeps, we know a fair amount about the treatment as a friends horse has them and manages them well!

It was more to do with prevention as she hasn't actually got them, we are on straw currently but will be changing to wood pellets soon! Are there any barrier creams it would be worth applying?

May I urge a note of caution re. use of pig oil & sulphur ....... I followed everyone's recommendation on here and used it on my boy; he's got white legs and pink skin, and poor lad, after I'd put this mixture on his legs he came up VERY hot and he was obviously distressed, so I washed it all off with Tea Tree oil shampoo.

Yes I can hear the Sages saying I should have patch tested first, but I didn't realise this stuff could be so strong.

So please be careful if using for the first time!! Yes, its good stuff, but can be quite caustic on sensitive skin. Someone told me that its the sulphur that is the problem not necessarily the pig oil.

Same here sjmcc! Vet mite jabs were always useless too, had some awful reactions to them and had to give so many of them to get anything similar to the result needed.
