Why do they say that they are only suitable for horses up to 16.2hh? As far as I can see there are a number of makes of trailer that has as much headroom as a 510.

G isn't a great loader and I reckon that he might prefer the extra width of a single horse trailer. TBH you wouldn't want to travel another horse with him anyway as it'd probably traumatise it if he got a bit silly.

Galaxy for all helpful suggestions:D

I have a Ivor williams 401 and don't think it would fit anything bigger than a 16.2hh in it. Before I brought it I did look and some others though, cheval liberte which again I don't think would fit anything bigger than a 16.2hh in it, and the Vans Futuras, which was just beautiful but a wee bit too costly for lil old me, had a lot of room inside & may well fit a bigger horse in.

I love my single trailer, easy to tow and light as pie!! Lots of room inside, can happily tack/untack, groom pony and move happily around inside.

Can I have galaxy caramel? :D

Thanks, not what I was hoping for but no point buying one if the giant won't fit in it.

Hi, I have a single Ifor and travel a 15hh welsh cob in it. I would say that in terms of length, it is OK for my horse, but much bigger (longer) than him I think it'd be a squeeze. Maybe hes just very long of body?! So unsure of how well it'd suit horses over 16.2 tbh- sorry!

Mine takes a 6 ft. I guess with the extra width of the trailer, the horse could stand slightly on a diagonal to take the length? Height wise he seems to have loads of room :)

Hi. we chose a Hotra Elegance 1 1/2 for our 17.2hh mare, on the basis of the best headroom. She takes a 6'9" too, and travels just fine in "her" trailer. She can use the extra bit of width to go on a slight diagonal. We've never (touch wood! lol) had any problem and she has been travelling in it for over 18 months now. Hope this helps!

Wellsat.............sorry I know you boy and a past owner of a IW 401 he will definitly not fit, you will need a 510/511.

Lol, thanks. Was hoping OH might let me drive a smaller trailer. I've been banned from driving muself anywhere once we have a trailer. Will go back to looking at the 510s.

Yes, OH was feeling kind and added to my budget so we now have a nice 54 reg Kia Sorento. Not well known as towing vehicles but as a capacity of 2.8 tonnes and we love our other Kia so should be fine.

OH doesn't think I'll pass the trailer test, he's probably right, reversing is not my strong point.

hello...we have a 401 and 403..we have big horses they fit in fine and love travelling in the single trailer.

Rather than listen to us...as buying a trailer is a big investmet pop along to your local ifor williams dealer...they will probs lend you one to try.

To be honest though a 16.1 horse easilly fits in one...and as they are custom built maybe they could assist.

All trailer dealers are diffrent the dealer i use is excellent and even lent me a trailer while mine was being made

You would most likely need to pass the B+E test to tow a single trailer as well, as your car's kerb weight/gross weight combined with the trailer would be over 3.5t in total.

I think the reason the 401 says suitable up to 16.2hh is that it is similar in dimensions (length/height) to the 505 (also says suitable up to 16.2hh) and you need the 510 to give the extra headroom/length for bigger horses.

If you find yourself a good instructor, I am sure you would be fine doing the B+E and getting your independence. :)

I have a single CL and have had my mare in it when I bought her - 16.2 wearing 6ft9 rugs. The lady I bought it off also used it for a 16.2. She travelled nicely in it.

Unfortunately in a past home my mare has been through the floor of a trailer and so it is difficult to load her into my CL (due to her length and reluctance to step forward up to the breast bar it is difficult to shut her in!) - I am aiming to take my trailer test again this year (self taught and failed on the emergancy stop 2 years ago) so I can get a bigger double trailer which she can go in without the partition.

One thing is that my CL has been downrated to allow me to tow it on my post 1997 license. I bought the trailer to travel my 14.2 around in who weightapes at 420kg. My big mare weightapes at 600kg so could actually puts me over the max gross weight for the trailer due to the downrating.

If you're not keen on the idea of doing a B+E test to tow a trailer, had you considered doing the C test to drive a truck?

My horse is over 17hh and wears a 7' rug, so I went for a 5t truck as it's got 8' of headroom. I looked at 510, looked at horse, shook head, bought truck...

I have a cheval libertie. My 16.2hh tb who is 6ft9 in rug size, travels very comfortably in it. It has plenty of headroom. The amount of space for his height and length was a major consideration in to buying this trailer. He does not have the partition in and seems very happy with this. I feel that this trailer suited my needs and his needs well. The trailer is towed with a mazada 626 and as it is lightweight we meet all of the correct requirements for towing.

I've had a 17hher in a ifor single. Ok he's a tb with a low set neck and takes a 6"6 rug. No probs with head room, getting him in, in fact he traveled the best in that then any other box

I have a 401 and travel my 14.3 Sec D in it. My friend also had one for her 17.0hh CBxTB who took 7"3 in a rug and he travelled in hers without any problems.

I'd love one, I used to have a 3.5ton and it was fab but I can't justify the expense. Once you've paid tax, insurance, breakdown, MOT etc you're looking at over £600 per year before you've even been anywhere.
