This isn't meant to offend anyone .

But it does make you wonder about people's honesty in the reasons why horses are for sale, I googled the persons telephone number in from my post below just to see what came up, and there were a few adverts from the same person, with reasons for selling from setting up a new business and buying a new horsebox.

Now they well may be leaving the country, but they were also setting up a new business in April 08.

I just don't know what to think

Why?

Maybe they were buying a new horsebox in order to set up their company , their buisness then went bust and they decieded to leave the country in a canoe

Believable???

I once googled a sellers numbers and found she'd been in trouble with the conciil, she'd fruded the goverment of ALOT of money and her mother wore a tag!! Sadly I'd already sorted the vetting, unsurprisingly it failed, didn't match the passport (So basicly a totaly different horse then I was being sold) and was likely broken down with buggered tendons.

Editied to say - I'm guessing there were drug involved too as though I'm no vet she wasn't crippled when I viewed her.

I have to admit to googling sellers now, if it was a dealer I'd probs ask on here to see what people thought of them. I often buy 'projects' or horses with 'issues' just because these people are clearly being honest.

Just make sure you have it vetted!! Have been caught out by less than honest people when buying, and still living with the consequences!!

Check absolutely everything!! there are loads of people who buy and sell a few and pose as private sellers when they are not really, usually they haven't had the horse long enough to know what is/isn't wrong with it, and you don't have the flexibility to exchange etc.. you should(!) have when buying from a dealer!

I just think if they are not 100% honest about why they are selling it, you don't know what they are being honest about!! Doesnt mean its not a fab horse though!!

But FWF if I'd googled her first I would of saved my self £250! (Although the best £250 I've spent, hate to think if I hadn't vetted the horse) For someone to have stolen that much they can clearly lie and are a dishonest person. And as the story goes I would of been correct.

FWF- I know you can be too wary, but rightly or wrongly it begs the question why they need to be dishonest, if indeed they are.

I know alot of people bend the truth alittle and horses are sold on for a variety of reasons, but it could stop potential buyers going to see the horse for fear of what they are actually buying compared to the advert, especially if there is alot of travelling to do.

a lot of people are greedy and unscrupulous. i heard recently that my former neighbour in northants bought a chronically lame horse for a pittance, doped it up on bute, put it in the sales, and walked away with £2k.
nice guy, obviously. pity the poor new owner, and pity the poor horse.
caveat emptor and all that. let the horse tell you as much as it can, don't believe half of what the seller tells you.
fwiw some of us are totally honest when it comes to selling horses. but there are some very good actors out there, and some very greedy unprincipled b*****ds.

i get really angry when sellers do no tell the truth especially when they know that i am buying for my daughter. my childs safety is paramount. i have had one with dodgy passport. one that weaved like a pole dancer despite seller saying it had never doing it before. i am now so wary i feel i am reading things in to everything thing i am told and am bordering on paraniod if honest. i also google names and have thankfully been put right by HHO friends

Id suggest the same as ISH then, perhaps its all for the same reason? There's nothing wrong with caution i agree 100%

BUT I can't stand really sceptical people when you are selling a horse. I had people to look at mine last week and they looked at me stupid when I said why I was selling him. I felt like saying if you don't like my explanation jog on!!
And if you look at HH's post which could be on page 2, its really disheartenning when people cross examine you about things!

People often sell horses just because they need/want to but give a false reason (eg financial situations/no rider) as they know people will be very suspicious if your just selling because you want to. thats what i often feel when i go and look at horses. if you like it, and it passes the vet, then who cares why its being sold?

I guess like anything there are 2 sides to every story but I for one would welcome more honesty from sellers.

I have always been 100% honest in horses I am selling (usually after I have bought from a dishonest seller) even if it means I lose money.
Sure we can have a horse vetted but that far from covers everything.

Well I had a horse vetted and now I'm left with a horse that is unsound with little hope of coming competition sound. I now question would I have a vetting again, however id I did I would want further checks to be carried out along side the vet paying more attention to specific areas that really the vetting brushes over.

A vetting really only gives a snapshot of what they find at that particular day, I don't hold the vet responsible it is just one of those things, but as my vet pointed out it is more than likely the case that he has had this problem for a while before I purchased. The vendor seemed very genuine, but if I knew that they were telling fibes I doubt very much I would have bought from them.

I don't consider this the same situation as HH had with her awful customers and yes the horse had a lucky escape not to be purchased by a complete ar$e.

No you are right its not the same situation but it just goes to show how someone's honest actions can be viewed with suspicion very easily, if you want to!!

I never have horses vetted and never will.

I always google sellers' names and phone numbers. Mostly just to check if they're a private seller or a dealer but it's amazing what you can find out. I don't think you can be too careful when buying a horse.

When I bought my new boy a couple of months ago the seller seemed so honest and Tucker is exactly as she described him but sadly this is not always the case so it pays to do as many checks as possible whether it's googling or veterinary !

I don't mind buying from a dealer or a private seller, I've bought from both in the past with no problems.

Unfortunately, there are some dealers out there who misrepresent themselves as private sellers for whatever reason and, in respect of those dealers, you'd have to ask yourself - if they lied about that, what else might they lie about ?

I can't understand why any seller should be dishonest - surely it makes more sense to just come outright and say it, rather than lying to cover it up? It's the horse that will get the consequences if the owner lies when selling. And it's the certain peoples dishonesty when selling that causes paranoid customers which isn't great for honest sellers.

What's wrong with just admitting that you don't have enough money/time/confidence or whatever the reason for selling is...? I have been to see some horses where the stories just ended up so dodgy we said no not because of the horse but because the owner just seemed to be covering up something.

ive sold all 4 of my junior ponies, 2 horses whos capabilities i had grown out of and a youngster last year - which went to a close friend.

i have never had to lie to sell one - im brutally honest.
i turned 2 people away from my JA mare as they were not right for her and with another very quirky pony i told them everything - even stunts he hadnt pulled for the last year!

i dont get why people lie?
i have been lied to by a seller before - and it all came out and now myself, friends and family will never touch this person again.

i genuinely do not have time for my youngster - i have a full time job - 2 in work showjumpers and a retired one to look after.

when i put on my ad / when asked my reason for sale and i put lack of time - will i be believed??

probably not.....
