People's opinions

Has anyone had the same experience!! I'm having problems at the livery yard where I keep my horse - thier is one livery who is an A.I who seems to think she knows all about my horse, how to look after it, what to feed it, what rugs it should have on, how long I should ride him for etc I don't really like this woman or get on with her but don't want to start an argument with her. Any ideas on how to solve the problem!!

Smile sweetly and then ignore everything she says...... every yard has a resident expert on your horse...... the ones with the qualifications are just plain dangerous

There are two answers here. The first is to just ignore her, of course she doesn't know your horse, who does she think she is, etc, etc.....

The second is that we can all learn, and it costs nothing to listen to her and thank her for her advice. YOU can then decide whether any of the changes she is suggesting might actually make sense.
I wouldn't dismiss every thing she says simply because you don't like her - unless your own knowledge is so superior and complete that you couldn't possibly learn anything from anybody - in which case would you come and be my guru please. After decades with horses I am still learning

Smile sweetly and say: "Thanks so much for your advice - but I'm afraid you're wasting your time. I'm totally adjusted to my inadequacy!" She will NOt know how to counter that!

I would just ignore her you get one at every yard, its amazing really makes me laugh we are on a large livery yard, majority of horses there are expensive pets, hardly ridden but everyone seems an expert and feels the need to advise you whether you want it or not. lol

To everyone who said ignore her, have you read some of the recent threads on here from people who can see a fellow livery doing something dangerous or harmful and is ignored or abused when they try to intervene??

Perhaps you should consider what advice is being given, and the relative levels of experience before deciding what the appropriate response is?

There will always be a yard busybody and if that is what she is doing then by all means ignore her, but consider that she may genuinely believe that you are making a mistake and want to help. Maybe a second opinion on her advice from a more experienced person before you decide whether to ignore it. What does your own instructor think? If your instructor is more experienced than her and thinks she is wrong then you have the perfect response!!

Thank you for all your responses.

I have tried ingnoring her but i've had other livery's come to me and tell me things that she has been saying behind my back, how my horse should be doing far more and with a decent rider he would go far - I compete at elementary level dressage and do lots of showing where he's always in the top 6.

My instructor is a fellow of the BHS but don't get many lessons from him as he lives so far away so the rest I do by myself.

It actually sounds as if the other liveries are more of a problem than this woman.

We all have opinions on other people's horses - and I know for a certainty that people do about me and mine. And a lot of what people say about me and mine are valid - super talented horse, muppett owner and rider.

However, at least they say it to my face and it's in the form of a discussion, rather than the idle bitching of the bored.........

I think these are very good points! Even if this person IS a bit of an interfering busybody, she may have some useful advice to offer! Why not give her the benefit of the doubt and listen to it? You might learn something!
