People's opinions???

Is it just me, or do there seem to be alot of people who seem less than tolerant of other peoples views and opinions on this forum??? Whilst I completly agree that the post below may have caused offence to some people by generalizing the term "happy hacker" surely this witch hunt is not neccessary, and just detracts from the original topic?

Opinions are fine - but there are such things as tact, diplomacy and common good manners.

There is also such a thing as 'quitting while you're ahead' or indeed, 'quitting while you still have a head'.

All of these things appear to escape the poster who is the catalyst for this thread.

If it helps - in RL I would have been considerably sharper with them

The original topic was a confused shambles - insulting hackers, calling people numpties, implied superiority of 'professionals' and 'competitors'.....and somewhere in that car crash there was a valid point about cruelty and potentially damaging riding. I can only assume the witchhunt was a direct result of misinformed opinions and misplaced arrogance on the part of the OP.
 
so if you follow the reckoning of helping people to improve if you see bad riding at events, surely you should point out that calling riders numpties is not acceptable, and offer advice on how to improve communication skills, rather than just being really rather rude back?????
 
I thought Ziggy gave an excellent reply to the OP on the original topic (sorry to single you out Ziggy!) Perhaps if the OP had phrased his/her OP in such a clear and articulate manner they wouldnt have received the response they did.

As it was they dug themselves a hole which they appear to still be digging

The OP poster was trolling. If they actually wanted a debate, the case would most likely have been laid out very differently. To me it just seemed like an obvious attempt to kick at something the poster knew she/he would get a reaction from.
 
Yes ok I hold my hands up, I was a bit rude.

Everybody is entitled to have their own opinion of course. I suppose the OP was just showing their assumed youth and doubtless inexperience by being so blinkered.

I have just started taking my lad to comps and we are both very nervous and sometimes he gets it wrong and i end up socking him in the gob

,however he forgives and we learn and we progress

People on here are fab,and happy hackers are great,i am one in between schooling etc!
But i will eventually become a happy hacker and probably have more experience and capability of riding a horse better than any jumped up competition rider

No,,,, its all normal for H&H, some posts are a bit like lighting the blue torch paper and standing well back while the popcorn gets chucked about, but thats what I love about H&H it livens up an otherwise boring night on TV,,,,IMO lol

I see your point but

Bad riders are not necessarily in control of their bad riding.
People who insult others are totally capable (in the most part) of controlling what they say. So one point does not follow the other.

I think it depends on what mood people are in at the time of reading a post and most people I think get a feel for what other people are like on forums and many people also know each other, so when a new person posts something like that, I suppose a lot of people may take offence rather than thinking 'oh yes, well perhaps they have a point' kinda thing, if that makes sense.

I have noticed sometimes people react differently depending on who has posted what, which is again fair enough.

Sometimes I do think its a shame that new people get accused of being trolls (and I'm not referring to the recent post, I'm making a general observation) for posting quiet strong opinions about a certain subject, as you just know their digging themselves an early grave lol but why? for speaking their mind? but yes I do agree many of them just simply do it to cause arguments and indeed are trolls, so now I tend to have read, have a little chuckle and leave it at that.
