Feeling a bit guilty about the money I spend on my hobby. I often read thread about the amount of money people spend on their horses but was wondering what percentage of earnings this represents? Is there an average?

I spend about a third of my wages on my horses' basic keep, provided I don't buy anything extra like new gear, or even vets' bills, jabs, etc.

I darent work it out but I dont care I can afford it & it makes me happy
I dont smoke I don't drink so why not spend my money on something I love, I will never feel guilty about spending my money on my horse

I spend about 40% of my wages but i have 3 horses - if i only had one it would still take about 19% of my wages... Its a lot of money to be spending on them tbh to keep them in the luxury to which they have become accustomed but dont mind as i love having them

(that percentage is just on livery, hay, feed and insurance - not shoes, vet bills etc)

Rough guestimate it's under 15% of my basic income.

I'd feel more guilty if OH had to put up with me when I don't have a horse, I wouldn't know what to do with myself! Actually for the amount I ride most of the time it would probably work out cheap to just use a riding school!

i'd say a rough guide would be 40-50% but i have 2 at two separate yards, it's a bit more at the moment as i'm trying to get the right gear for my mare. i would say you can't put a price on happiness but i'm not feeling the happiness at the moment with the weather, my mare and so on but hey we all know it a be worth it in the end. or so i hope :wink3:

Well under 10% but it's hard to be exact as we have a smallholding so some costs are shared with other animals (eg hay) I reckon it's probably around 5-7%

I have two but they are 11.2 and 12.2 so that helps!!

Just under 10% in the winter, less than 5% in the summer - bliss, roll on summer please! Like Kassieg said - I don't look or keep a close eye on it as it makes me happy.

I know what I can/can't afford with my horse so I tend to just spend what I want for that month within reason and don't think anything of it, he's my hobby and my life. I had 7 years away from horses and riding - I had loads more money for going out, shopping and holidays but I was never as happy as I am when riding, so for me that makes it worth it 100 times over :)
