Does anyone know what percentage of pregnancies result in twinning, and one embryo having to be pinched out? We know that our mare had just one follicle that ripened, so if that has been fertilised through AI process, what are the chances of her conceiving twins?

Not sure about the % of twins, but we had a mare scanned last week with twins. Unfortunately both were stuck together instead of already being seperated.

The vet managed to get them apart and pinched one, however, we lost the second one as the mare then came into season on Sunday........

You can relax, with a single ovulation of one follicle she will not have twins. Twins form when two follicles are released and fertilised during eostrus. Unlike other species of mamal follicles do not divide to produce twins.

Opie, thanks so much, you have really reassured me!

I took the decision yesterday, with much anxiety, not to send my mare off to stud today for her 14 day scan. She has a foal at foot who has had a low-level infection for some weeks now - snots and occasional cough - and he has had one treatment of antibiotics, but it still hasn't totally shifted. I really didn't want him to be stressed by travel, his mum being in stocks, finding himself in a very busy stud ... but was worried that I was being really irresponsible for taking the decision to pull her out of her 14 day scan. You've really helped to set my mind at rest. The vet did say something similar, but I think they are very committed to the early scan, so she wasn't entirely approving of my decision. But that was partly because it would give us early warning if she's not in foal ... well if she's not, I wouldn't want to try again at this point in the year. She's a mare who has very obvious seasons, so we'll know soon enough anyway! And then we'll just have to try again next spring. Hey ho!

What RufusBlueMoon forgot to say about Beth as well is that the reason she cannot have her 14 day scan at home is because she is a very difficulat mare when nnot in stocks - kicked vet and nearly broke her leg whilst doped for her ovulation scans and only got worse each time, fighting the dope and kicking out and so she has GOT to be in stocks if being scanned from now on as too dangerous/difficult out of them

Sorry have misunderstood your reason for asking, mares can twin ovulate even if the vet thinks their has only been a single ovulation a mare can release a secoind follicle after the first and semen can last for quite some time in the mare, with the norm being accepted at 72 hours from ejaculation but with extenders these days it seems to be surving much longer periods of time. I really would not be missing a scan, if baby is not well now at least have something done later when he is better just to be on the safe side, please :-)

Its all true! (Just didn't want to reveal what a witch Beth is to all on Forum ...

We are lucky that her son is such a total sweetie, and stood rock solid yesterday for the vet to listen to his chest and take a blood sample! (Fairly impressive for 12 weeks)

In his mum's defence it does have to be said that she had a difficult birth, with a haematoma and infection post-birth, and therefore lots of messing about internally, so has developed a strong intolerance of vets putting their arms up her back end! (And she is also a real Diva .... )

diva is one word 4 her

She did have a tough time of it in past few months with lots of vet exams and so vets (or anyone wanting to stick their hands in funny places really) are not very welcome right now....
