ok so i have 5 children age 3-14 they all want to ride .some can some cant .so what breed do you think would make the grade ? reasons for please ie temperment? age?hieght? this is just a general questions post. i,ve just exhausted my mind ,need a few ideas to look in to .not to compete
 
I have the perfect pony for you! only its not broken yet LOL!

seriously though have you thought about a new forest? The are generaly nice natured and put up with allmost anything, plus will go out and jump gallop everything that a teenager will want to do

I had one when I was about 6 (couldn't get on on my own!) untill I was 11 and it took me hunting, xc and all other pc activities.
 
get a native. you can get a slightly smaller one who will suit the small children and be big enough to still carry the older. 13.2/14.2 i'd say, something 13+ who is wise and safe. a new forest would suit the job, as would a welsh - both very calm sensible breeds IMO, and new forests can suposedly carry a stone for every hand so a 13hander should be able to take the older kids happily.

Something of about 12hh, a NF x, dartmoor etc, would carry a decent weight and still be small enough for the tinies.

We ended up buying a shetland, which in retrospect wasnt the cost effective way of doing things, as we'll need a bigger pony at some point in the next 18 months... so we're now looking for a 13.hh NF for me and my eldest. We'll end up with two ponies.... OH is NOT happy lol.

Shetlands are good, kid sized, but you do need to be firm with them, and have to treat them like a big horse. they're very clever and can be nasty little gits if you let them,.......

Good ponies are out there, I thought in looking for something safe and sane I was seeking the impossible, but we found one, not too far away and he didnt break the bank to buy.

Id agree with a native. It depends on the weight and height of your children as well (mainly the difference between your youngest and oldest - the 14yo might be extremely tall for all we know in which case, yes it probably IS impossible!!).

I dont think a shetland is right for a teenager, great for lead rein kids but as xxKatyxx said, they can be little sods.

I think the dartmoor / new forest route would suit you best? Or a cross like a Welsh x Highland etc.

IMO its better to get something which is a bit too big for the youngest, if its the other way round then you'll be looking for another pony when your 14yo outgrows it quickly!
 
I don't mean to be rude but surely looking for a pony which will suit all your children from age 3 to 14 is a bit like looking for a single T-shirt which will fit them all? i.e. impossible!

I agree with MagicMelon that you would be better getting a pony which is a too big for your youngest child to ride independently at the moment and then keep him/her on the lead rein until they have started to develop a more independent seat. Your older children can have fun on the pony right from the outset and won't need roller skates on their feet to ride it!
 
Definitely a native, 13hh upwards. Newfies are great ponies.
But, if it's a whim, I would loan only, teenagers have a habit of doing things for a while then lose interest!
 
agree with all that has been said my eldest is not a big lad as yet so im going to look in to nf has anyone had any experance with eriskays .alot of breeders recomend them for children
