The recent posts about weight have really had a detrimental effect in my opinion. Of course the debate is a valid one, but so many people on here are looking for comfort that they are not too heavy for their horses and frankly I havn't seen one person who looks 'big'.

If you are GENUINELY worried about it, fine, but I think alot of people on here that are carrying a few extra pounds should get over themselves... you know you're not fat.

It is getting a bit tiring, having the 'ooh I'm sooooo fat' comments when it is blatantly obvious that they just want to be told otherwise.

It doesn't matter what you weigh, it matters that you are riding a horse appropriate for your size.

i see where you are coming from - but i assume you are reffering to me - please dont assume i am looking for 'you are not fat' comments as according to weight watchers i am 2 stone overweight and with no bulky fleece, you are unable so see quite a few rolls, I am fat! i am a very confident person and dont feel the need to be reassured by people - i guenuinly was interested in replies as this has been a bit of a niggling worry since i bought the pony a month ago and with the posts over the past day or so it has caused me to 'ask the question' i am doing something about it. No offence to you and your post, but i resent your implications

I think different people have vastly different ideas of what constitutes being fat. I know a lot of relatively normal-looking people whose BMIs mean they are classified as being overweight. Some people may classify them as fat, whereas other people take fat to mean someone who is hugely obese. It's just a matter of interpretation ...

Mmm but even if you are overweight, it doesn't mean you are too heavy. To be honest, I don't think anyone under 13/14 stone need even think about worrying unless they are riding a very delicate tb or are a very unbalanced rider or something.

Yep! I'm a size 10 & would love to lose half a stone, however my love for cream cakes & chocolate mean that isn't going to happen easily. Hmmmmm, must get on my horse more & ride & I might get a bit more toned!

see - this is where it all becomes about your own body image.

According to your posts I am the same height and weight as you. I too have the same 'rolls' when riding unless behind a big fleece/bodywarmer - yet I dont think I am fat. Yes I am probably a bit overweight for my height etc, but I am happy with myself, can still fit in a size 12/14 and have no worries that my horses can carry me....

I find it quite odd that someone would look at me and think I am fat - i'm no supermodel but who is...?

I lost my sed D to colic, he was the same height/build as your lad and I never once worried I was too 'big' for him....

what the horse cares about most is whether you ride 'light' or ride like an unbalanced sack of spuds

I can happily ride an 11.3, have done for years - but obviously not that often and she is now 24 and never been lame in her life. My weight varies from 8st 4 to 8 st 12lb

Whilst the RDA have weight tables they are based mainly on horses doing slow work - but with possibly unbalanced riders

the pony club Prince Phillip Cup also has weight tables for riders/ponies and these don't include the saddle. I know that I'm legal (or was 15 years ago) on my 11.3 at 8st 7 plus saddle for PPC

Does anyone remember seeing the 'PC' mounted games at Olympia - been on a few times- with the show jumpers riding the PPC ponies - those ponies were being very active and didn't look bothered by the size of the riders (within reason)

but those riders would have been riding 'light' because they are top riders

I do think we are a weight conscious society and with obesity an incoming problem from USA rightly so - BUT we also need to accept that the other end of the scale is equally wrong - and having known one father whose daughter died of anorexia and another girl - now a young woman - who spent years in hospital/therapy for bulimia - I see both sides of the problem

I said on the other post, that I find posts of people that are clearly not fat, going on that they are, astoundingly irritating. Imagine how people who are actually overweight (and feel quite emotive about it) feel. On the other post by walder, a lot of people would look at that photo and wish they were her size, and when they read the post would just feel helpless!
I think of it this way, 99.9% of women have some grip re: their bodies.
Everyone who does not have a ED is too fat, and those who do will be too weak to really "do" horses.

ETA now i've said my piece I can enjoy this fresh cream scone without the pangs of guilt! muwah

I agree but some people genuinely look in the mirror and see something different to what the rest of the world sees. Its very hard not to be self critical being a woman in todays society.
Personally I know Im not fat - my backside is but Im not lol that doesnt mean I dont have body hang-ups. I would love to have more shape. I might be a size 10 but I have cellulite! Id rather be a size 12 and have none!!

Walder - absolutely no need to resent anything. I wasn't referring to any one particular person - but perhaps that you think this thread is about you, and you want peoples opinions on your weight says something about you...

This thread is really for people to have a little reality check, most people know deep down that they are not fat even though they may not look exactly as they would wish.

I am giving up on human standards of fat/ thin and reverting to horse standards. I have plenty of bone and a condition score of 4. I am officially a Good Doer. The only downside to this is that I may have to wear a muzzle...

it is such a sensitive subject. i had weight problems when i was younger, at the age of 10/11 i was 11 and a half stone, and i have to say that it was all thanks to horses that i lost my weight, i got so much exercise from them. however i am always lookin at myself and comparing myself to other girls but yet i do love myself for me.

i went from that 11 and a half stone to just under 8 in under 6 months and actually felt pretty rotten for a long time after. tired lack of energy mood swings. i still want to loose somemore weight but i try and stop myself from thinkin that because i kno that if i start loosin weight again i won't stop an would almost definatly fall into a serious weight disorder. (due to extreme paranoia once i start)

be happy with who u are! we all feel self concious sometimes, and if like me u hav had weight problems in the past then even more so than people who haven't. as long as your horse is happy and healthy and you are happy and healthy keep doin what you are doin!

Forget the muzzle - you would prob benefit more from 3x 40min sessions ridden work a week

... and you can eat what you want!

I've only just seen these posts so I thought I would just add to your very sensible comment - I am fat so I have a horse that it capable of carrying me - and I'm not worried about either!

Must admit my weight has crept up since losing my dainty 14.4 arab x and gaining my sturdy 15.2 irish cobby thing. Time for another choccie!

Borrowed my OH's heart rate monitor a few weeks ago to try and prove to him that riding was exercise.

In 35 minutes of schooling I burnt just over 400 calories - loads more than I thought! Interestingly canter raises your heart rate more than trotting which i wouldn't have expected just sitting down!

Shut him up for a few days though...
