Any tips? My mare is not keen on her feed and I think it may be due to the taste of the tablets (although how a whole big skip full can all taste of pills I dont know!).

How do you give pills?

I stick the tablet on their tongues via the side of their mouths while they're munching their tea. One pony just wouldn't eat anything with the tablet in and I found this way he usually swallows it with food without even biting it. I've nearly lost a finger more than once though, so beware if you try it!

Try dried mint from, errrr Natural Health Products - I think.
It does work to mask nasty 'poisons' we try to administer.
Good luck - hope you find something that works!

Hi starlight,

I just hide the tablet (it's not very big) in a piece of apple or carrot and hand feed it as a trreat. Much better then disguising it in bucket feed, at least this way you know it's in the horse.

My friend chops and apple in half, then cuts a little hole in the flat of the apple, puts the tablet in and feeds it straight to her pony. Occasionally he drops the tablet, so she repeats it. And yes, he is a fussy old thing.

Have used these methods successfully for the last 4+ years. Either in a handful of speedi beet or get a small piece of carrot (or apple) make a deep hole with end of hoof pick insert tablet and hand feed - sometimes helps to have a back up second 'uncontaminated' piece to quickly follow on to take their mind of the taste of the first!

I tried everthing ... hiding it in apples etc and now he won't eat apples from my hand

So for the last 3 years ....

I soak some High Fibre Nuts overnight in water ...
In the morning I soften the tablet in a tiny bit of water ...
Using a large syringe/doser, I put some HFN mix in first, then the tablet and then top it up with some more HFN mix ...
I then carefully put the plunger in and expel the air ...
Then administer it, like a wormer ...

I am now confident that he gets the complete dose every day.

Motor now pouts his lips, waiting for the 'mix'

... not bad for a horse, who I used to struggle to worm and I would come out of the stable 'black and blue' after him running round the stable and 'fighting' me 17 years ago

Good luck and I hope your horse is ok?

Thanks for your ideas, I think I may try the syringe idea because I have tried hiding them in apples, polos, bread and hand feeding but it was no use, the crafty mare always knows.

I hide our pony's in a bit of apple or carrot. At the moment she is on a very low dose of half a day so it is quite easy. At one stage she would just eat the pill straight off my hand on its own but has got a bit wise to that now. I once took a pergolide accidentally (don't ask, but was very ill

) and didn't notice they had a strong taste but pony seems to think differently. How many a day is your mare on?
