Am about to run out of my first lot of Pergolide and have heard its much cheaper to buy from either on-line or a chemist but how do you go about getting a prescription from your vet? Do you just ask and they happily write one out or is it not as easy as that? Also, does anyone know of a website that I can safely get Pergolide from?

My 30 year old pony has been on pergolide for a few years now. My vet is brilliant - they couldn't match the price on the internet and happily write out a prescription. The price for the pergolide does work out significantly cheaper over the internet than from the vets. Having a prescription enables you to shop round and get the best price. I just ring the vets when I'm getting low and they write me a prescription. My vet does make the effort to look at my pony when on the yard, just to check she coping ok as I think that is something that vets are required to do before writing the prescriptions. I can't remember which website we get it from, when I get a minute I'll look on the home computer and find the website address.

My friend gets hers from the local chemist. Still cheaper than the vets.

Yes, but the vet still has to write the prescription in the first place. If you have been a good customer, they might, if you ask nicely, put a 'repeat' or two on it, but then you have to leave it with the pharmacist. Our vet charges approximately £10 for writing one for us. And they HAVE to have seen the animal in question in the last six months, although I gather it doesn't have to necessarily be for that ailment in particular.

I got a prescription from my vet for £10.00 they were very understanding that the internet is cheaper and I used VioVet at £58.00 for a hundred .Hope I wasn't too late to be helpful

I too, pay about £10 for a repeat prescription, but the last lot I got from my local pharmacy was only £38 for 100 :)

You can ask for your vet to write you a written prescription and will likely be charged what others have said, and just to clarify that's per prescription so per drug and each time unless you can get so many repeats put on it. By law they have to see your horse evey 6 months regardless. I personally wouldn't get it from online, there are some amazingly good fakes out there and you could end up giving him something completely different. Try your local pharmacy or supermarket pharmacy instead.
