Is an bodys horses on this medication and if so did it help your horse if so and if it did not why? Any info on this drug or the diease cushings would help me greatly? What dosage was your horse on as well? Thanks

my horse as been on this a week, so i can't really tell you much if it is working, a lot of people have told me that it is really good. she does seem to have picked up a bit, and luckily hasn't lost her appetite yet. she is only on half a tablet a day at the moment and will have to have her blood tested again at the end of the months course.
they seem rather expensive from the vet, to what they cost from other places.

Hi,
My horse is on pergolide and has been for coming up to a year. It oes take a little while to have any effects but they do brighten up and progressively get better. Our old lad is a lot perkier since being on it and is back to his younger self and *touch wood lots of times* hasn't had lami since been on it. He's on a tablet a day.
If your horse has been diagnosed with cushings please don't get disheartened. It was around christmas time that ours became really bad and I thought we would have to say goodbye however since he's been on pergolide he reliving his youth a bit!! Over the past year he's been out playing at the cross countries (and clearing up the rossies and trophies a bit aswell!!) so there is hope to enjoy your horse for atleast a few more years.
http://www.laminitis.org/cushings.html is a website I found helpful about learning about the disease but remember they don't show all of the signs and pergolide is not a cure but see it as a way to prolong your time with your horsey

My friends horse was on it so I helped her do quite a bit of research into causes of Cushing's and laminitis and different treatment regimes.
Unfortunatly Cushing's isn't the same in every horse, it basically causes a dramatic imbalance in hormones and the dopamine and ACTH become out of wack so then the cortisol is unregualted which is why cushingoid's become more suceptible to infections (high cortisol has a negative effect on the immune system).
Pergolide is a dopamine agonist, in most Cushing's cases dopamine is low which is why most diagnosed horses are put on it. Dopamine controls the ACTH produced from the pituitary (high Dop = low ACTH and vice versa). If dopamine is low ACTH is high which then means cortisol is high and these two molecules can wreak havoc inside the body when in too higher levels.
Not all Cushingoid's have a problem with thier dopamine therefore putting them on pergolide can increase thier dopamine even more which is also bad, high dopamine can cause laminitis just as low dopamine can. Which is why if you have a cushingoid horse you should get a full blood profile done (dopamine, insulin, cortisol, ACTH, serotonin etc).
I have plently of useful papers on Cushing's and pergolide, give me a pm and I'll send you some links if your interested.

My shettie has been on this drug now for 13 days, as he is only 13 i wanted to give him the best chance of a normal life. I also will have him blood tested in 2/3 weeks time to see if the dose is correct or needs adjusting he is on 1/3 of a tablet.
The vet did mention he may lose his appetite at the start of the treatment but so far he as only ignored one bucket but did carry on grazing so did not worry to much.
I wish i could be more helpfull but it,s the beginning for me also, as for the price i have not had my bill yet so i would find that interesting if anyone knows the cost ??.
My lad is insured so thats a bit of worry off my back, but this obviously will end after one year, and don,t look forward to the exclusions that will now apply.

[/ QUOTE ]How big are your horses if you dont mind me asking? Coz that sounds a low dose my horse is 16hhs and is just started on 500mg a day then in 2 weeks will go on to 1mg a whole tablet?
