Can they jump?

Tentatively looking for a new horse so window shopping lots of on line ads and videos and there are a lot of pre s that would do the dressage job I want but I also want to pop the odd fence (not planning on badminton but up to 80 cm would be nice... can they jump? Do they essentially hate it or should I put the, on the list to consider?

I'm sure they'd do 80cm no bother. I believe they're as common in Spain as the ish is in Ireland. The Spanish must jump them.

80cm should be no bother at all. Like all horses, they are individuals and probably there will be some who don't like it, but all I know seem to enjoy it and most are regularly popping over 1m quite merrily.

The GB PRE show was last weekend - there are several pictures and videos on the GB PRE FB page of the jumping. I think one of the videos is 1.30m, but most are 80cm.

Lovely horse, BBP.

I am currently helping with an imported PRE that has jumped 1.20 at home, she apparently never stops although from my point of view she is extremely green she obviously loves to jump and once the basics are better established there is no reason to think she will not be capable of doing a decent course, the breed is new to me and I am becoming rather fond of her and like her attitude which seems to be very open to everything we do.

Not a PRE but John Whitake used to have a Lustiano that he jumped at Grade A!

There's a few near me doing 90 stuff and they'd probably go higher if their owners wanted. You'll also see them pop a jump in working equitation classes.

Not a PRE, but my Lipizzaner absolutely loves her jumping, she's capable of well over a meter, i just need to find the control before we start jumping higher, have competed at 70-80cm with her so far.

Why would they hate it? I honestly think they're just not known for jumping purely because they're bred more for dressage but there's no reason why they can't / shouldn't. My now-retired Lusitano x TB was an awesome show jumper and eventer. He popped round CIC*'s and 1.20m's no problem. So you could always consider a part bred too? His only issue was he had quite a high front leg action (as many do) so wasn't ideal for the dressage phase of eventing funnily enough!

There’s one my old boss bred doing pretty well at BE so 80cm should be no problem at all!

Yes, they do, often rather well. I wouldn't say they are any more prone to disliking it than warmbloods tbh

Iberians can def jump. John Whittaker jumped a lusitano, Novilhero, that had also evented. I also used to know somebody that evented a Lippizaner.

Jumps are included in the obstacle phase of working equitation and PSL and PRE seem to be the breeds of choice for WE.

my lusitano was (one of many) offspring of Opus 72 who was full brother to Novilheiro and champion bullfighting horse for several years. Novilheiro was a GP dressage horse, won his first and only ODE and won the most money sjing in 1983 I think? Crown Cornelian was a son of Novilheiro. I guess you don't see that many jumping competitively here because those that tend to buy them don't do jumping. they make good driving horses too.

Do you have a pic of your lusitano 😍 I’ve seen pictures of Opus in some breed books and he was stunning. There is a lovely tribute to him in one of Sylvia Lochs books too.

I visited a PRE stud in Cornwall about 10 years ago and their stallion could certainly jump! I think they were aiming him at affiliated classes.
