Anyone's dogs ever suffered with this.? My 11 yo mongrel has been diagnosed and needs to have two teeth removed and a large amount of tartar removed from his back teeth.
I'm a little concerned about him having anaesthetic at his age and wondered if anyone else's older dog had been under the gas.

Also any experiences of anyone who's had it done are welcome, also an idea of price? Thanks.

Not sure on price as work pays but I take old dogs for castrations/lump removals/dentals almost every week. I have probably taken hundreds of dogs over 10 for ops and haven't lost one to a routine op yet. I have taken dogs as old as 16 for dentals with no problems - it is important that the vets do bloods beforehand and give extra fluids if indicated but most vets will do this for old dogs as standard. Anaesthetics are very safe these days, try not to worry about it too much :)

Thanks. You know how it is! Worry about them sick! Anaesthetics are far more advanced yes I accept these days. I'll give the vet a call and get him looked at and booked in x

My 10 1/2 year old greyhound went in to have her final 4 teeth removed last week (the 4 big canine teeth). She had bloods taken, was on a drip all the way through, had 2 chest x-rays as the vet was concerned about her heart, and obviously had antibiotics & pain killers afterwards - it was £435.

I have had lots of dentals done on my dogs unfortunately, and although I always worry myself sick there has never been a problem nor have I ever heard of a problem (my mum breeds & shows cavaliers so also has regular dentals done for them at all ages). The price for a normal dental is usually £250-£350 depending on how many teeth they extract.

Do come back once it is done and let us know everything went fine :) Honestly, I am absolutely sure it will be no problem but as I said I always worry myself silly about it too....

Is a small risk with GA, but can't really leave dodgy teeth as will only get worse & can effect more than just mouth.

Been to vets. They've an offer on for major dental work including all drugs, anaesthetic, descale and up to numerous extractions for £200. I opted for the blood test prior to op to ensure he is up for it. Quite relieved now after talking to a lovely vet.

He's booked in for Thursday next wk. given a course of Ab's due to gingivitis so hopefully he's going to be feeling better

My little dog had a general anaesthetic last week for descale. He is 9 and fortunately didn't need any removed but it cost £270!!
He was fine though as I was concerned due to a recently detected heart murmur.

Woweee I know!,!

Well he's in, he was very sad when I left him so there will be an update later on and how many teeth he's got left! The abs cleared up the gingivitis quite nicely and his gums were much healthier and pinky as opposed to red :-(
Meanwhile the other dog Archie, is very quiet :-0

One collected doggie, minus 9 teeth and my purse minus £247 which I think is a pretty good price. It included blood tests prior to anaesthetic. He was a very good boy and now has much better breath! :-)

I know someone who took their dog to a specialist recommended by their own vet - and had several teeth removed and FILLINGS in several teeth. All done under GA - oh and the bill - over £900!

Really glad everything went well, the price is flippin excellent so pleased for you about that as well :) But the fact your boy is better now is the main thing :) :)
