Hi folks - has anyone else's horse had a peri rectal abscess and what was the outcome?

My 8 month old filly didn't look right Friday morning, I couldnt put my finger on it. Went back to her at lunch time and caught her straining to poo like it was really hard work and what she produced looked different than normal. She then laid down and stayed down for ages and I thought sod it I'll ring the vet query start of colic, before we get to Friday evening/ weekend call out.

Vet came out, heart rate slightly raised, temp up, went to do a rectal and said 'oh'.... there is a mass pressing down from above fingers length in and she couldn't manoeuvre around it.

Trailered straight in to the equine hospital with her mum, ultrasound could see an orange sized mass but no liquid so not presenting as an abscess, did a belly tap that was clear, drew bloods and kept in, monitored Sat.

Long story short vet rang this morning, there is now 1-2cm of pus with 5-6cm of fibrous tissue around it, the bloods came back high inflammatory markers understandably but nothing else out. They want to try draining it tomorrow when there is a full team there to culture for specific antibiotics - I think there is some concern about her being quite small, usually they use a chest drain.

Any experiences? Keeping drains in/ managing them?

Just updating thing in case anyone else needs the info. They came home Tuesday, with potassium iodide to feed her to help break down the pus whilst the cultures were cooking. Luckily it came back sensitive to a few AB's so she's now on a long course and will be rescanned in 3 weeks. Fingers crossed its vanished by then. She is 90% back to her normal silly filly self - fingers crossed.

Think I was very lucky to catch it when I did!
