Just over three weeks ago, one of the youngsters started coughing. I happened to have the vet out so mentioned it to her, she said to give soaked hay instead of haylage & see how she went,
Within 48 hours she was coughing up thick yellow flem. I called the vet who said to pop in & pick up 7 days of TriMed. She had the full dose & the yellow gunk did go but she is still coughing two weeks on, i think that it's getting worse again.

Another gelding that she has been out with has also started, he's been on Trimed for 4 days without any improvement. Both ponies are still 'well' & full of beans. Bright eyed & playful with their friends in the fields.

I've not had coughs that haven't cleared up within a couple of weeks before. Does anyone have any tips or ideas? Think i'd like the vet out to check them both over.

Think I would too. I'm surprised they prescribed w/o exam first??

The filly was looked at by vet who was out doing vaccinations, she said to call if things changed, which they did after 48 hours when she started with a yellow discharge, this was discussed over the phone, & given that the vet had seen her two days ago, she was happy for me to collect a prescription.

I am a very long term client & the vets have known me for nearly twenty years so not really surprising that they were happy for me to pick up some antibiotics.

I have arranged for vet to visit again but i suspect as Amymay says, it is a virus & there's not much to be done.
