Persistent Pin Worms.. Desperate for any advice!!

My boy has been struggling with pin worm for about a year!
I have tried 3 different brands of wormer on the vets advice - strongid P, Pyratape and Equest Pramox and although they seem to clear it for 6 weeks or so, it then returns. I've even tried putting the wormer around his bottom..
He keeps rubbing his tail raw and I am seriously frustrated and out of ideas.
Does anyone have any ideas as the vets seem to be at a loss!
 
My old pony struggled with this last year, rubbed his backside literally raw. I wormed with panacure 5 day, then 2 weeks later a double dose strongid p, then every 4 wks with single dose strongid p until at least 2 months without a sign of dead worms in poo. Took almost 12 months to get rid of them, and I couldn't believe how many dead worms came out! Mine lives out, so I surrounded his field with electric fencing to stop rubbing. Also had some pinworm ointment from vet to paint around his anus (think) once every 3 days. It does take a long while to get rid of them, you have to be persistant. Dont leave longer than 4 wks between the worming - to do with length of life cycle of the worms.
 
Five day panacur and ensure you are cleaning around his bottom daily (ideally twice) and pop something like vaseline around it and do not forget to disinfect everything....

I had been worming every 6 weeks so I perhaps need to step this up. What should I clean him with?
Also good advice on a cream from the vet. They hadn't recommended this so I will chase them up again.
Can I upset his insides by worming too much?
 
My vet advised any remaining wormer in tube put UP the bottom and after this they were gone. He said the pinworm lives in the last foot of the colon so by the time oral wormer gets there there isn't enough potency left.

Easiest and most hygenic to clean with is baby wipes - usually they are gentle with no perfumes etc, and if ok for a baby then ok for a horse! Agree with putting vaseline or similar on too, do this then put ointment on. If sore you could use sudocreme instead of vaseline.

My affected pony was succeptable to colic and had no problems, and the gap between worming should allow for any upset to subside anyway. The pinworm ointment I had was a liquid you apply with a brush - I used one of those hoof oil brushes that come with a holder.
 
Hi - I have also been dealing with this for 11 months today exactly.
I have followed a very rigid worming routine - 4 weekly rotating between double dose strongid P and panacur 5 day. I have also used ivermectin based wormers, but although they are technically effective against pinworm often they are absorbed too early in the gut to be of any use.

I have tried wormer enemas but I didn't hold out much hope as all the research I have done implied it wasn't effective. which it wasn't.

Luckily my horse doesn't rub, never has.

My advice would be - make sure you clean all eggs from bottom daily, thoroughly. I use baby wipes. Then use Vaseline around the anus.

With regards to worming - I am now starting on a fortnightly worming routine, and my vet is going to order in some piperazine for me which should hit the worms hard enough to wipe the lot out.
 
I used 5 day Panacur when knobberpony got Pin worm,and also wiped her bum once a day with Neem oil.Apparently the Neem oil kills the worms and also interferes with their reproductive cycle.It worked a treat,all gone within a week and her field companion didn't get them either.

It also works on head lice when over the counter stuff doesn't.
 
I got rid of mine just with neem oil. Applied it neat or mixed with vaseline all around the bottom, anus and just inside the anus every evening for a week, then every couple of days, then once a week for a few weeks then just monitored. Saw no more signs of worm eggs after 3 days and have had no sign since, nearly 2 years on.

Neem prevents them from breeding, repels them from laying and if they do lay as an oil it doesn't allow the eggs to stick. Do a search on here for neem oil and pinworms, several others have also treated them this way successfully and no need for massive amounts of chemicals.

Do a patch test first and don't use with breeding/pregnant mares.

One of my friends was also advised this for the same reason. I hope you manage to resolve the problem soon. Have you been using the same wormer every 6 weeks?
