I had a bad fall from my horse a couple of months ago and, amongst other fractures, broke my arm and wrist very badly. I have been left with reduced function in the affected wrist and hand which is permanent. I have emailed my insurance company this weekend to enquire whether I'm eligible to claim but just wondered if anyone else had experience of claiming for such an injury.

I'll be limited in what I can do with that hand from now on but my main reason for wanting to make a claim is that I'll no longer be able to drive a manual car and I need some help in affording an automatic (assuming I'll eventually be able to hold the wheel!)

Any advice/experiences welcome. Thanks for reading.

Is it general horse insurance or a specialist injury insurance ?

If general horse insurance I don't see how you can claim unless you have someone to claim against. Maybe I'm misunderstanding?

My husband had an accident on his moped and similar injuries caused by a hit and run driver. As there was no one to insure against he was told his injuries / loss of earnings etc were not claimable

The personal injury cover that is attached to horse insurance generally only covers specific injuries (ie complete loss of a limb, or an eye). You'll need to read your small print.

You will almost certainly not have a personal injury claim. Someone has to be negligent which is usually the owner of the horse - but this was your horse and you can't claim against yourself. Unless something happened to cause the fall which was negligent and then you might have a claim against the third party who caused it. What would pay out would be critical illness or sick pay cover which, depending on your small print, may cover anything from lost wages all the way through to a total award. But it will depend on what cover you bought I'm afraid.

Without reading the policy hard to comment but my understanding of personal accident cover is you are covered for injuries sustained regardless of whether someone is at fault. Similar to health medical cover. However some may only cover permanent disability so depends how the medics class your injury. You may be entitled to loss of earnings if that applies.

If you have BHS membership there is some limited personal accident cover in that - but I think you have to physically lose a limb to claim - not just the function in on - even then I think its; £10k for loss of an arm or leg! so hardly going to find the lifestyle changes necessary

Other personal accident insurance - speak to them to see - each will very so it depends on what cover you have
