So how do you explain a horse which is reknowned for its laid back, phlegmatic temperament (albeit a windsucker) turning into an anxious, wired horse who feels as though he is going to burst our of his skin?

Could it be because he has moved - from a yard with turn out in a grassless field with 6 other horses to a yard with just one other horse (30 yr old with arthritis) but turn out with grass?

Any answers would be most welcome.

yeah - could be the change - how long has he been at the previous yard and how long at new yard?
from a "herd" environment to just one horse might also be quite an odd/upsetting experience for him

Has he normally been with a large amount of horses?
is he showing any signs of settling down?
are you still exercising him as much?
How are you reacting to his excited/nervous/anxiety?

i've replied to someone else who had a similar problem. i told her about a horse of ours that we sold who was the ultimate laid back horse but a crib biter, the new owner knew, anyway he suddenly turned into this sad naughty horse in the autumn. we have had it diagnosed as ulcers, and have been treating it as such and what a difference in the horse, back to his old self, 'the summer horse'. the change in home, the time of year causing stress etc may be aggravating the ulcers, does the horse windsuck more?

Thanks for your replies. The horse does seem to be windsucking more, and I do get the sense that he has a gut problem e.g. ulcers. How are these generally treated?
