I watched Matthew Wright using a Pessoa yesterday and think it would be really beneficial to work my youngster in one a bit. I have done plenty of lunging but have never used on of these. Obviously i would use it very loose for short periods of time to start with and gradually build it up over time.

I am just a bit worried about the first tiem i put it on that the horse might freak at it as of where it sits. I suppose if it was really loose it wouldnt be too bad? Anyone had any experience of this?

Thanks

none of mine have worried about it - it should feel the same as a fillet string or leg straps of a rug unless it's too tight
if you have a 'worried' attitude it would communicate to your horse
also - how young is 'youngster' as really wouldn't use on anything too young

Your horse should be fine- they do have to work hard so definately best for short periods only with youngsters.
Sometimes they kick out but the pessoa should be fitted high enough so it doesnt get caught up- they get used to it pretty quickly. It is normally the canter that they get upset but I think this ius more to do with the fact they have to work very hard.
The only ones who dont tend to be the horses that dont like hard work or being restricted!
They are a really useful training aid IMO.

She is quite forward and willing anyway so should be beneficial. Just have to fork out for one now. I've heard about one but had never seen one being used till yesterday and it looked really beneficial if used properly. Thanks

I've been using one, once or twice a week on my 5 year old and she's not had a problem with it and does work very well in it. The back strap doesn't worry her at all, though she is quite a chilled lady

I've used a pessoa quite a few times and find its really beneficial for the basis of strengthening muscles, creating topline and encouraging youngsters to work correctly from the word go.
I find when using it for the first time I secure the back end to the roller so its not too much of a shock, then drop it down after a circle or two, you occasionally get a few flicking ears and worried eyes, and i've had the occasional bronc but if you take your time, reassure your horse and keep everything slow and simple you shouldnt have too many problems. Good luck with it, I personally love them!

Hi, the pessoa is great if you want to keep schooling but dont have much time . mine has about 10 mins with it unconnected to warm up , 10 mins hard work ,then a cool down . gets sweaty in all the right places and I'm not knackered and can fit this in 3 times a week
