I am after something to use when lunging to build up bums :)

I would long rein but horse knows exactly how this works and so it takes all my energy to keep him going :p

So I need to build up his bum (his actual topline is fine) and I like the pessoa but I dont like the way the horse gets jabbed in mouth when steps through from behind.

I could trot over raised trotting poles but given my horse he would either a)tangle himself up in them or B) jump them :p

ideas? :)
 
John Whitaker training aid does the same as Pessoa and comes with a roller! It's worked wonders on my horses topline and backend. Look online, I got mine for about 70 quid I think
 
I bought a Pessoa a few years ago it was brilliant absolutely loved it, then moved yards and accidentally left it behind, so bought a cheaper kincade version, it is awful!! falling apart after 4 months of use and the rope is shiny which means when your using it it slides down and gets longer and longer. I would recommend the real thing more expensive but excellent quality and lasts forever(had mine for 5 years before losing it)
 
if the pessoa is set up properly, it definately shouldn't be jabbing the horse in the mouth! I swear by pessoas, although you need to persevere with them as I think it can take some horses a while to get the hang of it and show improvement. I'd be a bit wary of cheap versions, some I've seen have stiff rope and dodgy pulleys etc. which catch and then the horse will get jabbed in the mouth!
 
I have a cheaper version and think they're great. The young man soon realised there was no point trying to evade, ha!

Is it hilly where you are? I've moved to a v hilly area and my boy's bum has got much more powerful.

I had one of these and the quality and design was the same as a real Pessoa and excellent value for money. However I did re-sell it back on ebay, (made a profit!) and bought an Equi-Ami which I prefer as it is self centering and doesn't sock them in the mouth. :)
 
how about a tail bandage or similar attached at top of girth level - run round behind bum - to other side - cheap then ;) and really helps them use their derrier - i was scpetical at first but it honestly does a fantastic job :)

pessoa doesn't work well on my mare - i use the above 'breaching' and a lungie bungie (also edited lol) for the front end - she works beautifully in that and RI is really noticing the difference in her ridden work too :)

also - strapping after work helps build up bum ;)
 
I have strapped in the past but I dont just want to build up bum, I want to make him engage correctly as well :)

The tail bandage idea sounds quite good, may give that a go :)

Whats an equi-ami?
 
I have an equiami. It's like a pessoa but is self centring, works with the same principles I think but it's supposed to not pull the horse in the mouth as much as a pessoa can. Their website is quite interesting. My ex racer is going really well in hers.
