My cob hates having side reins on as he doesn't like having his head held with them, he pulls back from his neck and clearly doesn't enjoy them, even when like washing lines!
I tried a bungee which was a little better but he still resisted.. But a while back I used a friends pessoa and he went beautifully in it so I decided to get my own..
What's all your opinions on them good and bad?

personally I wouldn't use 1. If the panic their mouth it attached to the pulley that is behind their arse & that's not a situation I want to consider.

I don't use gadgets at all though so I'm probably not the best person to ask, I prefer traditional methods, they've never failed me. If I wanted anything remotely like a pessoa I would just long line

I looked into them before on vets advise and I think the main issue is that the action of them means their mouth is pulled as the hock lifts which effectively punishes them for activating the hind end. When u watch it's obvious what happens but a lot of people swear by them so I guess it's trial and error and finding what works best for you.

Yeah I have seen a lot of people saying the same thing about them but I have also seen them work so well too :/ guess it's worth a try as he worked so well in it last time :) Thank you all for opinions :)

I have found it really depends on the horse. The HO method works well on my one mare but not on my big gelding, instead he is lunged in low side reins (loose, not forcing him at all) and an elasticated tail bandage round his bum. I find that the key to getting them relaxed and working long and low in side reins is to first make sure they are active and engaging the hind end (which the elastic bandage helps) before introducing the side reins. And always start with them loose.
