Came in the post this morning (well Pessoa copy lol the Topflyght one) Now using it for the first time, would you put it in the long and low position so it goes between front legs or position C which is similar to a side rein fitting? mare is used to working in longish side reins, instructions say Position C is an ideal outline to start of with but then say long and low is a good one to warm up and cool off with

If it's the first time I would use position C. Stick with it the first few times before moving up to position B, depending on how the horse copes with it. Depends if she is used to working in an outline or not ie. how well developed her muscles are already.

I clip mine onto the same place a side reins but I also use long and low to warm up, but my horse is used to being ridden long and low when I warm him up and has quite and establised outline in this position.

Sorry, that wasnt much help was it? Im not really sure at what point you would put it on long and low if the horse isnt used to working like this.

I start off with mine between Axels front legs and lunge him for a few minutes each side with his head down. Then I move it up to the side and start working him properly in trot and canter for about 10 mins.
At the end of the session I normally unclip it, tie it up and then let him trot round and have a nice stretch with nothing on!!

I always thought they had to be working long and low and stretching over thier backs first before you can pick them up into a 'proper outline'?

The very first time I used the "C" setting while she got used to it. Now I use 95% bottom setting with literally 3 minutes on each rein on the "B" setting to start to educate her about carying herself in an outline. Then back to bottom again to warm down, then a lead-about with none on the way back in.
