Pessoa Training Aid

Have you bought one?
Start with it on the lowest setting and start very slowly- they can find it very very hard work so you need to be careful. 5 mins on each side is plenty to start with and always allow your horse to stretch out afterwards.

Obviously it's for lunging in only, and there are three settings. It works on a system of pullies and attaches to a lunging roller and the bridle, a little like a de gogue or chambon, but also has a sheepskin strap which goes behind the horses rear to encourage them to work from behind.

There are three settings, the first to encourage a deep, low outline to encourage the horse to stretch over the back, and the second which attaches to a lower ring on the roller which will work the horses topline, and the higher setting which works the horse in a more advanced outline.

It's hard to describe, you really need to look at some pictures of it on a horse to see the different settings - if you buy one, it does come with pics.

Most people start with the lower setting, which goes between the horses front legs and progress onto the middle setting to work the topline.

It is intense, so i would start with 10 mins on each rein on the lower setting for a few sessions, then build up from there.

Will it build more muscle using it on the lowest setting or the highest? Or is the lowest just to encourage them to stretch. I was lunging by TB in his last week on the lowest setting and he was fine on one rein but on his stiffer rein every time I asked him for canter he would do a couple of strides and then jerk to a halt with his head in the air practically sitting on his bum. Any ideas? He has used it many times with out problems.

I dont think the lowest setting is to be used for canter.

Ive been using a pessoa, once/twice a week for a few months on just the lowest setting and its helping my boy get a bit of neck muscle and his bums getting nice and round (altho this could be fat). We did try the next level up but he insisted on tucking his head between his knees! So shall keep on the low level for the time being.
