Hi,

So I have been shown my my yard trainer how to use the pessoa correctly and have up until now only used it with her. She has put it on with me etc.

Today nobody was at the yard so I decided to have a go on my own (I have a very calm easy horse). I put it on exactly how she shown me but the ropes were in even and I couldn't tell why?

It was over his bum with the triangle bit on top then the two lines either side through side hoops then cliped onto bit with the clip on a roller but when left dangling or I pulled them forward they were wonky by half a foot.

The hole this was on the loosest setting so the ropes wernt unevenly tightened as could go bigger so were exactly the same if that makes sense?

Why were the wonky? They were identical on but one was longer? I then clipped them to under on girth and could see one was looser but when I walked him over to school the tension felt the same so I just did a very light few mins each way as I had put it all on.

Any ideas what I done wrong? They seemed and felt even when he got going?

I'm silly sorry!!! Any options be great! I'm worried I worked him wonky lol

I'm worried I worked him wonky but he seemed fine and could me doing it once cause a problem if it was wonky? I don't get why it was all exactly the same??

I like the KISS principle - how about lunging him in just side reins? Read up up on some of the trainers who did just that without gadgets - Sheila Wilcox, Molly Silverwright? Maybe try riding him, schooling whilst out hacking - and not worry about where the various ropes and ties go.......schooling a horse these days can be a bit like erecting a tent? Blooming confusing!

Lol thank you, yeah I should have just took the bloody thing off but I thought here's my chance to have a go on my own and I've come home worrying it was wonky and me lunging him in it... Lesson learnt, is unsure dont so it!

I'm fairly new with horses and had one rubbish one after another, then bought This boy of livery lady as he is super quite and calm. He is only 5 and a tb but acts 15 and dopey! But he needs schooling and can't afford lessons everyday so this last week I been ridding on my own just bridle and saddle but his head is stuck out looking around and I trying to push him forward and twiddle reins but he just looks left right left right lol as I twiddle. I shouldn't ride without instructor nuts it's so expensive. I'm just worrying so I thought I should get and pessoa him and now worried I shouldn't have :/

Hack him out - have some fun, take him on pleasure rides, etc, Get him going forwards and then worry about outline etc. Possibly join an adult riding club (where you will meet plenty of people in a similar situtation to you) at the end of day, it seems to me, that you just want to enjoy your horse (have it relatively well behaved) but not a Grand Prix St Georges Dressage horse - am I right?

I wouldn't worry too much about schooling for a while then. Just hack out and get him going forward nicely off your leg in a good rhythm and don't worry about what he's doing with his head. The rest will come, don't worry. As far as the reins are concerned, you should be riding forwards into a consistent contact rather than 'twiddling'.

Good luck, he sounds like a lovely horse :)

I'm so worried I just started a thread on this now. So just stuff schooling for now and. Ride him forward? So just keep a even consistent contact and get him going forward for now. I'm terrified of ruining him... Bloody lunging him wonky today... Blaaa some ppl shouldn't have horses!! Lol

You sound like you suffer more from lack of confidence than bad riding :)
Just go out and have fun, and don't worry about ruining your lovely horse. If you ride him forwards into a nice soft, steady contact you are not going to ruin him. You'll probably find that after you have got the feel of your horse for a few months training sessions in the school will be much easier to compute. :)

I think that you and your horse will be probably fine - just don't try to take on too much advice from this forum! Ride the animal out on hacks as much as you can, get a mutual feel of each others (capabilities) and go from there - most horses, just enjoy being out and about, and then you can start 'twiddling' to your hearts content.....but remember that most horses only like educated 'twiddling' and they will only put up with that - if it makes them feel good as well....arch that neck, and prance!!!
