I used to use one on my boy (a copy I got on ebay) because he was quite idle and used to lean terribly on my hands (and on side reins when I lunged him) instead of carrying himself.

The pessoa really helped with this my urging him forward when he got heavy in front (it works by tightening the rope around the quarters when they pull/lean on the reins) and it really helped him.

However I can imagine that some people/horses could end up in a frightful mess if the horse took exception to the way it works and had a tantrum!

I also have a copy from ebay.

My current horse works well in it but the previous one bucked like a thing possessed!

I guess it depends on the horse.

I've got a copy off Ebay too, although I will nevr use it on my mare again, she just wouldn't take to it at all and was dangerous to herself and me. She would basically throw herself around and bronc, not worth it IMO. But having said that if the horse accepts it and it is used correctly it can be a very useful piece of equipment, but too often you see people putting it on the highest 'setting' and also people that don't thing to warm up before using them.

yes, it drives me up the wall too!

Personally even though I have debated for a while I still haven't bought one and now do a lot of long lining or double lungeing and it seems to do the trick for me and my girl just as well if not better...works out a lot cheaper and it is a bit more flexible as you can either work on the circle or use the whole school too without too much hassle ...

I have the JW version and i have found it fantastic for my boy to buld muscle, i was working him in side reins and long reining for a few months without any success. Bought a pessoa and he built muscle up in it over 3 months and looks far better now. I use it on the long and low setting, and wll take it up every now and then for a more upright outline. He goes really well in it

ive had the proper pessoa one for a few years now.you have to gradually introdice it to te horse because it works mainly on their back muscles.this is why some horses buck becaus eit is too tight.the pessoa one comew with full instructions on introduing it to th horse and i use it regularly now.it has really helped my horses to bring their hocks underneath them and really use their back end.if you are going to get one, id recommend the proper pessoa one.they work best.
