Pessoas... could be controversial!!

QR: I don't like them either. I watched some horses which I know are being lunged in pessoa weekly and I didn't like what I saw.
I have been using chambon for the last 10 years on all sorts of horses and agree with the sustainable dressage lady.

What you've described is exactly why I like a chambon. If you work and get after the horse, it will stretch down and really start to use it's back & take bigger, rounder strides.

I don't usually do gadgets but I swear by my pessoa. My vet, who is a back specialist, prescribed 12 weeks lunging in one for my horse's sore back and it has improved his muscles no end. I can ride him again now but still use it twice a week to help maintain the right shape. I wish I'd bought one years ago. Also I can't see how it is jabbing the horse in the mouth - my horse would be the first to complain if he was uncomfortable but accepted it happily from the start.
My vet does a lot of kissing spines ops and says he always recommends it as the best way of building up muscle after the op.

the only thing throughout this thread that could be contraversial, would be discussion of how incompetant members on here could be...fancy fitting/using something as potentially harmful as a pessoa and not know how to fit correctly/or indeed what it is supposed to achieve??

i totally agree with a couple of replies.the art of long-lining does seem to be pushed aside for another "fashionble" gadget

and that people cant tell what long and low is supposed to be-ie head always in front of the vertical. anything else is just on the forehand. mind you, alot of people ride like this so why wouldnt they lunge like it?

I read this too and haven't used my Pessoa since. I always had the suspicion it was sawing on my boy's mouth and not giving him a consistent contact! Maybe I had the breaching strap to low... Now I just worry about the damage I might have done.
I also remember years ago someone wise telling me it was just as good to lunge without anything. At the end of the day you are trying to teach the horse to balance, not just hold its head and neck a certain way.

We were going to get one, for a pony who would not take a contact atall, but after we had his back sorted he went brilliantly lunging with 2 lines. I don't get why people would want to use one, with lunging with 2 lines you have more control and more of a feel for what is going on. You could use a pessoa loads but if you have bad hand when riding its not going to make a change. If my little sister wants to lunge then she uses side reins, or if a pony if likely to be confused by the 2 lines or hates it around their back sides we do the same, but only then.
