Hello. Can anyone tell me what exactly is involved in getting a pet passport please. I am taking my dogs to Cyprus next year to live with me and I have had a quote for flying them out which includes paper work ext but, there is no mention of a pet passport. I know that some people take there dogs on holiday with them now using pet passports but surely people don't pay the huge amount I have been quoted just for a few weeks holiday. Any advice much appreciated.

Some transport companies have monopolies with certain airlines/airports and therefore can charge what they like. Some companies charge for the whole kit and caboodle even if you have certain bits of the procedure already done.
Also some airlines take dogs out as luggage and back in as cargo or vice versa which can really up the price.

Might it be worth speaking to one of the dog charities that bring in from Cyprus to see what route they use and the costs? It might give you a couple of contacts and I doubt they would be wanting to pay over the odds

Have you tried looking at contacting airlines directly? This will massively reduce the costs but not all airlines will allow it (many, but not all, insist on using agents). Far more likely to be allowed into Cyprus, it's the flying into the UK that's usually a major headache and the vast majority of airlines insist on agents into the UK. Try Lufthansa, whilst it'll mean going via Frankfurt they are great with shipping Dogs and they will deal with you directly, unlike BA, who won't. You need to look at all the options for air travel and don't just think of direct flights. Stopovers are not an issue at all so don't worry about that. Also try the likes of Air France and KLM. You don't need to travel on the same flights but preferable if you do.
As for pet passports, they are easy. Microchip first then rabies vaccination at least 21 days before travelling. Both can get done at the same time so long as the microchip is done first. You don't need a titre test but if the dog is under 12 months you need 2 rabies jabs. Your own vet will be able to do passports. See info here: http://www.pettravel.com/immigration/cyprus.cfm.
If you want to use an agent I would highly recommend contacting every agent you can find online for a quote. There are heaps of agencies and you will find their costs will vary a lot so shop around. I suspect most people taking pets on holiday in Europe use ferries or the eurostar. They charge £15 each way for pets and that's it. Zero hassle. On the ferries they have ship kennels and areas of decking to walk the dogs.
