Petition for FEI to uphold article 142 of general regulations.

Signed .. a little pesimistic whether the FEI will do anything about this.. they are far too beholden to vested interests in general. Far from being a means to ensure best practice they are effectively condoning abusive practices.

The FEI and other sporting governing bodies base themselves in Switzerland so they are not answerable to any government that would wish to take action ie the EU.

What we can do is pressurise our own governing body the BEF (who will also receive the petition) who are answerable to the UK government and rely on funding from both government and lottery funding.

signed and added to facebook. Also put a comment on the FEI on page on one of their links.
That was a truly vile display. i didn't watch all of it. :(

Done.

Seeing that video and bit shop has made me investigate the effect of ported bits as well. :( I'm a numpty when it comes to bits but I'm learning fast and I don't like what I'm learning I'm afraid. :( My previous illusion of less tongue pressure has been blown out of the water for starters. :(

Signed. The array of bits used in western riding is quite shocking. I know some people probably dont use the nasty looking ones, but some of them are scary. Especially the correction bits. Like, Why? Poor horses.

Yes Jennyharvey. I'm also hearing about terrible injuries sustained to horses soft palates etc. :( The injuries are mental as well as physical.
I'm also looking at the types of ported bits used here and they seem not too nice either.
Poor horses, between having the roof of their mouths poked and the bars and tongue crushed no wonder they throw their heads up or go behind the vertical... not much chance of escape especially if you add a crank noseband or flash. :(

No wonder the horse in the vid dips his head and opens his mouth.

Signed and added to a post I'd already blogged which included your first ref. to the FEI regulations. It's getting a fair amount of traffic, so I hope that helps.

Someone's put the petition on Fugly Blog's comments too.

Just watched that video from Epona you've linked SusannaF. I'm tragically mesmerised, staring in disbelief at the horses opening their mouths when the reins are pulled.

The only difference to some dressage training I've seen on video mostly rollkur/LDR is that there is no noseband keeping the mouth shut and the pressure is on-off-on-off (jabbing) rather than a strong consistant pull.
The bits may be different but is their action that different to the horse, especially when they can't open their mouths to try and relieve the pain/pressure?

Is any of this worth the money, admiration and medals? Not to me, I think it's all a disgrace and is cruel.
I'm starting to call this use of bits to cause pain/discomfort and other tack to supress horses' pain avoidance behaviours, condoned animal abuse.

Please sign and share, it is important that the FEI enforce their own welfare rules otherwise the gates are left open for the likes of PETA

I started it on Saturday, I think it still is a long way off its peak i would ideally have at least a couple of thousand.

Please keep signing and sharing this petition, we are not asking the FEI to do anything that their own mission statement says they should be doing anyway. Help the really good riders succeed so the training of horses for competition is kinder to the horse.

Top riders have a huge influence on what people do in their menages at home or livery yard everyday, so they should be made an example of when they cross the line towards abuse. There are plenty of kind trainers especially in the UK.
