Are horses generally thought of as food?

Do you look at your horse/horses and think mmmh....dinner - I doubt it!! Because I certainly do not.

[/ QUOTE ]
For some people yes, horses are thought of as food. I never looked at my pet fish and though "mmmm, dinner" but I still eat fish. I don't think I would ever personally eat horsemat but I appreciate that this is just me being sentimental and that other people will not have my reservations.
My point is that whether they are bred specifically for meat or not the issue really is the conditions in which they are kept and the way they are killed, and this welfare issue extends to any animal destined for the meat trade.
Animals do not know what is going to happen to them after they die or why they were bred in the first place and so what is important, IMO, is the quality of life they have before they are killed.

Can ppl not comprehend this ...... THERE ARE HORSES & PONIES BRED SPECIFFICALLY FOR MEAT AS WELL AS THE SO CALLED CLEANING UP CRAP ONES....do ppl not understand what is being said here..... no demand no horse breeding for meat.

[/ QUOTE ]

there is no need to shout...

yes i'm sure most people on here are aware there are "fattening farms/areas" in this country...in fact i have something that could be called a "fattening area" just 4 miles from my house...

Are you a Vegan, ES???

I believe someone said this:

[ QUOTE ]
No amount of petitioning will stop other contries eating meat. Accept it.

[/ QUOTE ]

And I believe that is right. Surely there is a case for making sure any meat, be it horse, dog, guinea pig or whatever people choose to eat, is cared for well and slaughtered humanely. Surely energy would be better spent trying to improve conditions for all meat animals, rather than trying to stop the consumption of one sort of meat? I don't get this whole 'not eating horses' thing, I really don't. What should happen to them? What is different about breeding horses for meat from breeding pigs for meat? I wouldn't eat horse, or dog, because to my mind they are pets. George Clooney kept a pig as a pet; I bet he doesn't eat bacon! Live and let live.

How is horse meat any different to cows or sheep? And why are you calling it a "fattening farm" when it would just be a "cattle farm" if it was for beef?

We do not breed horses in the uk for meat.
Fattening farms are what they are commonly known as abroad

The issue you should be putting your efforts into is the conditions of transport of ANY animal to slaughter.

Thats why i support Handle with Care

There is far too much sentimentality over the consumption of horsemeat. At the end of the day, it is still meat. I have no problem with people eating horsemeat, like any other meat, as long as the animal is reared, transported and slaughtered in humane conditions.

Cattle = Beef, Sheep = lamb, Pigs = Pork, Horses = sorry but there is no name apart from horsemeat

What do you think will happen to those horses that would have been slaughtered for meat if it is stopped?
Do you imagine they will all go to lovely homes and be looked after to the end of their days? No, there will just be a lot of crap, badly bred animals out there serving no purpose.

[/ QUOTE ]

What do you think would happen if we had a law introduced to stop reckless indiscriminate breeding ??

As I said in an earlier post sign if you want to im not making you.
However its certainly stirred up FOOD for thought, hasnt it.

After reading the above, i am at a loss as to what EXACTLY the point your OP was/is trying to make????

That was infact me. I appreciate my post was blunt and to the point, but it would appear that the majority here think the same, but have taken the time to explain further. Petitions here in the UK will have no effect on other countries, we don't rule them. We have no say as to what they eat.
The real issue, as has been pointed out repeatedly, is the care of horses, transportation of horses, the disposal of unwanted horses, the wastage in the equine world. THAT is what we must petition against.

Its simple really

Its a petition if you want to sign it then please do
if you dont , then dont.
Simple as that

No, but then I don't look at a cow per se and think "mmm meat". What an odd thing to say....

The point is that a lot of horses who go for meat are crap from the racing industry etc, so what do you suggest happens to those when there's no demand for meat? I would rather the cast offs from racing end up on someone's plate with a confimed future (as in no future) than they get passed from pillar to post, ending up with a series of useless, treehugger owners who think they're doing them a favour. These animals are often difficult and highly strung - I would prefer them to be humanely PTS and used for meat, than passed around, getting more and more confused with every home change.

And just for clarification, I really don't have a problem with farms that breed horses specifically for meat. As for your question about cows and sheep at shows...I think you'll find there are plenty of shows/showing classes where farmers show their prize animals.

OMG, I had no idea horses were bred for meat.

Would it be a huge revelation to discover sheep, cows, goats, pigs, chickens, turkeys, ducks, quail, pheasants, deer, rabbits, fish and ostriches are all bred for meat too?

Sorry, but you can't pick and chose what can and cannot be eaten because you happen to think one is cuter than the other.
As it happens, I think quail are much cuter that horses but I'm not about to start petitioning people to stop the quail meat trade!

You're right, however any petitions being posted on here will likely provoke debate.

I wont sign though as I have no problem with horses being eaten, and living in a country where horses are still classified as "agricultural livestock" rather than "recreational bloodstock", due to a thriving horsemeat market, I respect, and benefit from, all the plus factors with having this trade.

I have no problem at all with people eating horse meat, neither do I have a problem with horse slaughter, to me it is the lesser of two evils and saves a lot of animals from pain and suffering. I do have a problem with live transport and will sign endless petitions to stop that. Please, please for the sake of the horses, do not try to get slaughter banned in France, this will only mean longer journeys in horrible circumstances. If you doubt what I say, check out the web for Mexican Horse Slaughter - this is now the fate of hundreds of unwanted american horses since horse slaughter was banned in the USA, the slaughter was not stopped - just relocated to a country with a less than perfect animal rights system.

Re Quamille, this sickened me, can you imagine how the poor owner felt? They obviously knew who did it as it says they have prosecuted those concerned. It looks like an act of spite and/or revenge obviously aimed to hurt the owner. Poor beautiful mare RIP sweetheart.

some good points.

Dear Anita Getaclue,

Thank you for your fervent support of the recent laws that were
passed in Illinois and Texas that effectively ended the closely
regulated slaughter of horses in the United States . Thank you for
pushing the practice past our borders and out of control of the
USDA's standards for humane treatment of food animals. We also
appreciate your lobbying to pass the American Horse Slaughter
Prevention Act currently in Congress, which will end the transport of
unwanted horses to foreign slaughterhouses and keep each and every
one of them within the borders of our beautiful nation alive and well!

You'll be pleased to learn that the "alive and well" part is where
you come in! A new organization has been created through the
cooperative effort of the numerous horse industry organizations and
the USDA, called "Save Horses In Trouble Help End Abandonment &
Death," or SH*THEAD for short. In accordance with the guidelines of
this new program, and to alleviate the pressure on existing rescue
facilities to take in the thousands of unwanted horses, we have
decided to place one unwanted horse under the personal care of each
and every person that supported banning horse slaughter in the United
States .

As you may know, since the slaughter facilities have closed, not only
have rescue facilities and shelters been inundated to the point that
they have to close their doors to new arrivals, but many horses have
also been neglected, starved to death, or abandoned because of the
record high hay prices. Therefore, your participation in this
program is mandatory.

We understand that it is your feeling that horses are pets, not
livestock, and since most people in the United States do not choose
to eat them, therefore no one should, and all horses should live out
their lives in an idyllic pastoral setting. We also understand that
while your relatively large 40' X 40' suburban backyard isn't exactly
Yellowstone , it will just have to do. We are certain you will make
the necessary adjustments.

Your unwanted horse is of unknown origin, but is roughly 6 years old
(although we can't get close enough to him to tell for sure), weighs
approximately 1500 pounds and has a mean streak a mile wide, and has
been known to randomly bite, strike, or kick, especially at small
children, elderly people, and house pets. We have decided to call
him "Satan."

While Satan is capable of physical aggression, unfortunately he is
not able to be ridden because of his crooked front legs. He is
capable, however, of reproducing, as he is a stallion. This is of
special import to you, as your neighbors and fellow members of the
"Horses Are Humans With Hooves" group will also be provided with
horses through our program, some of which might be mares.

For your information, the $20 you donate annually to the Humane
Society of the United States can instead buy you approximately two
bales of high-quality hay at the current market rate. Assuming that
the bales weigh 100 pounds, and you feed 20 pounds to said beast per
day, this will be enough to feed him for ten days. You will be happy
to know that the lifespan of a horse averages about 25 years, and
therefore Satan can bring you approximately 9,125 days of enjoyment.
That is, of course, only if you provide him with the best care
possible, which we are absolutely certain that you will. To ensure
that Satan is receiving proper care, an inspector will visit your
home on a weekly basis.

At your request, we can provide you with contact information for
veterinarians, farriers, trainers, equine dental practitioners,
whisperers, and tranquilizer gun dealers in your area, as well as the
necessary contacts you will need for euthanasia and disposal of
Satan's earthly vessel when he crosses over. We foresee that Satan's
death will be especially traumatic for you, being the enlightened
individual that you are, and counselors are already available at
1-900-NO-SENSE. ($3.99 for the first minute, $1.99 for each
additional minute).

Unfortunately, there is no government financial assistance for care
and maintenance costs of SH*THEAD horses, as all of the funds
allocated for such things are dedicated to the Bureau of Land
Management's Wild Horse program.

Sincerely,

Gene E. Us.

stolen from the A.L.F. forum.! Very well written, in my opinion.

Well I'm definitely not a fan of ALF, however on this score, I can only reiterate that I am sooo glad to be living in a country where horses remain classed as "agricultural livestock" ... this is a direct result of us having a horsemeat industry here in Canada.
