I thought I'd do a report instead of burying this in the weekend plans post, as I was so proud of my boy on Saturday.

I was unusually nervous on the day, which was odd as dressage rarely triggers the butterflies these days. I had a think about what was causing my anxiety, and realised it was because I desperately wanted P to demonstrate how well he's been training at home and to do himself justice. Novice dressage isn't ideal for him as it doesn't let him show off the things he's naturally good at, which is collected work and more technical moves. Added to that it was a hot day (not his favourite competing weather, he's Spanish and sun means siesta!!) and his winter coat is coming through, plus his spookiness at the venue two weeks ago, and I was worried he'd struggle to knuckle down and be 'with' me.

I was so wobbly in the warm-up that I had a quiet word with P and asked him to look after me ;) He did, and in spades. He was a little looky but a bit of lateral work and on and back in the paces, and he tuned into my aids and felt fab. I dropped my stick and picked it up a few times to make sure he wouldn't drop off my leg but he kept up to the bridle. Headed into the arena and he had a look at the flowers and judges' boxes, but again some shoulder-fore and transitions got his attention back on me.

He was wonderfully obedient and soft in the test while staying forward, apart from almost stopping in the medium walk. His medium trots weren't as good as we've managed at home but still better than they used to be. Medium canters weren't as bold as usual either but I think the heat was getting to him by then! Overall I felt we did the best we possibly could have done on the day and I was absolutely over the moon, I got quite emotional afterwards!

At that point I didn't particularly care about the score, so getting a new Novice PB of 66.8% was the icing on the cake. A cherry on top was a qualification in 8th place for the semifinals!

He looks so grown-up in this one, maybe he's starting to find his serious side at the age of 12!

Woo well done!!!!

He doesn't look tired in the test and I am so jealous at how well you sit :). Which second round are you thinking of?

Brilliant result, well done. That was a super consistent test, no wonder you're pleased with him. Congratulations :D where's your second round?

He has the smoothest trot on the planet - I had wanted to do it in rising as I think a lot of judges prefer it at Novice, but he's easier to keep in front of the leg in sitting trot. If I tried to sit on Topaz it would be a very different picture!!

He's actually quite fit but his coat is incredibly dense already and he was roasting, poor boy. We're doing two Elementaries on Saturday so I've asked the YM to clip him out...I can't believe I'm having him clipped in August!!

Thank you!

I'm still debating which second round to do, both options are new venues. Our closest is Widmer in September but the Prelim is on a Friday, which becomes quite expensive for me as I'm a contractor so a day off means a loss of income (and we're at AM dressage on 14/15 Sept so already losing money due to dressage in September!). Next closest is Bicton which is over a weekend, so I'm tempted to do the longer drive and avoid taking time off work. I need to decide quickly as Widmer entries close in a week...

Oh drat, I'll just miss you. I'm there on 13th :D

Good luck!

Wow, super well done, he's gorgeous and what a lovely test.

Yeah, novice level is a nightmare with the smooth striding PREs, because if you just look at their legs it looks like they are doing very little. It's not until you get the greater hock flexion with collected work that they actually look like they're putting effort in. Beautiful to ride though - shame the judge can only see and not feel :D

It was flipping hot wasn't it? Fab results, sounds like you warmed up and rode really well. So pleased for you. He looks lovely.

Yes that's exactly it! Mind you he is naturally lazy and we've had to do a lot of exercises to teach him to push from behind instead of looking pretty. The collected and lateral work has helped hugely, he seems to enjoy it too :)

Thank you! Yes it was roasting...and now they're saying we may have a frost tonight! He was clipped on Tuesday and does seem a bit more cheerful.
