Petplan - experiences?

if i made you feel upset by that then i do appolagise

but all i ment by it was that i know i personally would not like my name spread about a chat room ecpesialy ( sorry about spellin) if i work for a company like that. and im sure you wouldn't?.

and i am sure you were only just expressing your opinon but i still belive that names should not be brought in to it.

Thanks everyone. Would prefer it didn't turn into a slanging match as yes, I did ask for experiences and found all of the comments useful. I don't think I will be going with Petplan as I found the person I spoke to rude and unhelpful - she wasn't Vicky either so it seems to be a trend.

I'm waiting on a quote from NFU but I suspect they will refuse to cover as they've just said "we have to refer this one to our underwriters". So it looks like I will be going with Amtrust!

OHHHH
I am sorry anyone had bad experiances... I have been with Petplan for years never had a problem everyone very helpful, and all seem to know and understand horses. I have spoken to probably everyone there haah the amount of trouble my horses cause All I have to Say have been helpful, informative and polite. More exspenisve than others but paid out super fast when my mare had colic surgery and always very proffessional IMO. I guess any insurance companies have good and bad points. I did have some with NFU and I never had a problem but a few times the Customer services wasnt great.
Key with any insurance be it a horse, car , house etc is read T.Cs with a fine tooth comb, make sure you understand cover and do call if you have any queries

good but very expensive. I had no claims and my premium rocketed up. I also informed them they i may make a claim as my horse had punchered his sole. I didnt make a claim in the end as it was minor and horse had no problems , however they excluded that hoof from the policy - cheek of it. I changed to NFU and saved about £350 for the same cover.

One of mine is with Pet Plan as she's 19, last year they paid out nearly £1000 without any hassle when Lady had laminitis. This year my premium has't risen but they have put exclusions on further caims for laminitis and also for cushings.

Slow to pay claims - I had to chase them on my vet claims several times.

Vets told me that Petplan are one of the slowest insurers to pay out.

Also, Petplan sent me a letter saying they wouldn't pay for part of my vets bill because those items weren't covered.... but they hadn't been specific about what the items were and nor did the amounts correlate to anything on the bill.

So I ignored it and sent the claim form in including those 2 amounts with the next vets bill, and they paid it all !

One of my friends works for a subsidiuary of Petplan and sat in on a presentation about how wonderful Petplan were, fast to pay claims and uber friendly helpful staff over the phone - I don't think so!!

On the whole good, I had three of my four horses paid out after their deaths with Petplan and although the last one took a while to settle (query as to whether horse was PTS on humane grounds) I did get paid on each ocassion.

well i have to say my old mare was insured with them (and they paid all the fees they should have done with all the treatment she had before being pts) and i have to say they were absolutely fantastic when i told them she was going etc. they were also very good when my trailer was stolen and paid out straight away.

I now have my new loan horse insured with them and my cat and rabbit - always been a pleasure to deal with and excellent customer service.

Cost wise i've been very impressed (its the same cost for my cat as the horse on the veteren plan at the moment!)

I found the exclusions ridiculous with my horse, i had him vetted 3 years ago and he had a broken tooth, jan 09 the vet found a broken tooth in a completely different unrelated place and petplan wouldn't pay. we've now removed vets bills from our policy cos it was so expensive and they obviously were going to wriggle out of paying anything. My other horse they never even asked to see his vet certificate which would have given them exclusions for sure, i never claimed for anything with him but it would have been interesting to see what they did

Had one a few years back with PetPlan - made a claim, they were easy to deal with and paid out promptly. On renewal massive blanket exclusions (unreasonable ones IMO) but I did manage after a lot of haggling to have the exclusion narrowed after 6 months.

They wouldn't be my first port of call (NFU or KBIS would be that) but equally they wouldn't be on a 'no no' list either.

I had problems with Pet Plan they did not pay out when pony PTS, I had asked their permission, they replied in writing stating they gave permission without predjudice ( pony long term arthritis and laminitis), when it came to pay out they paid vets fees of £300 but not for pony or disposal despite paying premium for both, they queried vets diagnosis and asked for a post mortem ten days after she had been cremated, you couldn't contact them until your claim had been submitted for ten days. I work for an equine cremation service and several of our customers have not paid us, as they have said that they were waiting for Pet Plan to pay out. All I can say is check all the small print and double check your claim form before sending it off, losing a horse is distressing at best without having hassle with the insurance company. I apoligise for any spelling mistakes but after 8 years it still winds me up!

my friend is with petplan and they have been absolutly wonderful with her nags. I am with NFU and they have also been very good esp with loss of horse claims and disposal costs- the only issue i had was i couldnt get hold of them the sat i found my poor ned had passed away so i had a PM anyway (which they insist on but dont pay for)

I think I am going to stick with NFU with the next one as my local reps are excellent both where i took the insurence out (somerset) and live now bedfordshire!!!

Good luck xx

My friend had been with them for 1 year and when it came to renew last month, they jacked the premium by 40%. She had made no claims and they had not contacted her vet. She moved to SEIB. I am expecting the same size hike when my renewal turns up later this month.

Both dog and horse are with petplan, my horse has had a variety of issues over the last 8 years and Petplan have always paid out - no questions asked - highly recommend!

Have used Petplan for 15 plus years and tbh they have always been good, prompt payers, helpful etc.BUT am changing to NFU later this months as my mares insurance is up for renewal as NFU offered same cover for £20 month less(was quoted £61 for Petplan despite taking off LOU £91 per month).NFU has good rep too.
