petplan or nfu opinions please!

Personally haven't used petplan, but heard a horrid story about a friend's horse who was PTS following a severe bout of colic and petplan refused to pay as she hadn't consulted them before having him put to sleep (despite it being the middle of the night).

NFU are great, paid my massive claim very quickly with no quibbles.

I'm with nfu, claimed once, no probs! Have you called nfu to get them to match the patplan quote? If you choose to stay with nfu then it's a good excuse to get them to drop the price!

NFU

1. I prefer their exclusion policy. No blanket exclusions on entire limbs

2. My friend had problems with her pony running around with head in the air. Vet wanted to send for bone scan and Petplan said they'd only pay out if the results of the scan found a problem!!! therefore if it came back clear she'd have had to pay!!!!!!! Bit of a gamble and she couldn't afford to take the risk and pony ended up retired.

I was with Petplan, and switched to NFU after my premium went up by almost 15% despite not having made a claim. So far no complaints with NFU, and they are definately cheaper.

Petplan refused to pay up when one of the horses on our yard kicked the side of my husbands car in ,I think they are better with dogs and cats I would go with NFU I have everything insured with them

Just be aware that NFU have told me they only cover you and family members riding or handling your horse, not any friends etc. I will have friends children and god-children riding my pony so NFU are no good for this. I'm struggling to find insurance for my lead-rein pony a the moment as they all seem to cover riders from age of 5 upwards, so if anyone has any ideas????

I'm with NFU and no complaints and I've claimed alot!

One thing to be aware is that NFU will only pay 50% of an MRI but they did pay for transport to various horsepitals which worked out the same as 50% of the MRI so it's swings and roundabouts.

I have just changed to NFU from petplan - due to price as petplan has just ramped the price right up! I changed to NFU and now im getting more cover for less! :)

I am with NFU and have no problems with them. However I had my retired mare PTS after a very serious kick that severed a tendon as in discussion with my vet we felt that her prognosis was so poor that it would be unkind to put her through the trauma of an operation with the necessary recuperation. I knew that this decision did not fall within the BEVA guidelines for immediate humane destruction and NFU confirmed this and did not pay out. Sad as it is, your friend's horse may not have come within the same guidelines.

Please take a look at AIMS part of the SEIB group- they have insured both my cobs and paid out on DJD on my older cob 5 years ago and just yesterday agreed to pay a very complicated claim on Dex who looked like a simple ringworm case and ended up being treated for liver and heart failure! it included biopsies, clinic workups, loads of drugs and a vast quantity of supplements- all settled less excess :) i am absolutely delighted especially for a DD payment of £25 a month :D they always have (pink) ads in H&H mag.

I'm with NFU and never had a problem. For sure they are not the cheapest out there but IMO you get what you pay for, you are paying for a service (in this case horse insurance) and you don't always get the best service for the lowest quote.

I'm with Petplan and have never had a problem they have been fantastic. I have had a horse with colic where the bills were ipto £7500 and my youngster has just had bills of over £3000 for his fractured pedal bone and they have paid out in full for everything within days. You can get hold of them straight away on the telephone and they are always very helpful. Whenever my horses are ill or have an accident I inform them as soon as I know it will be an insurance claim - I think this is very important. I think some of the 'horror' stories with all insurances are because some people are incredibly half-soaked and don't inform their insurance until months down the line when the vets are chasing the bills. I can see why they turn round and start saying no then. I'm not saying this is always the case but I never fail to be amazed at how unorganised people can be.

Never really thought of that! I had one PTS about 18 months ago and because he technically could have had surgery (even though in his case, with his other problems, it would have been pointless), NFU said they wouldn't pay, which was fair enough. I got the impression petplan wouldn't pay because they needed to be consulted but you are right, the adherence to BEVA guidelines sounds much more plausible! :)

I have my car and pony insured with NFU and my horse insured with petplan. However, I have never made a claim with either firm for the pony/horse.

However I did have to claim with NFU when my OH put petrol in my diesel car and the cost of repair was £6000! NFU paid out straight away.

I found Petplan really helpful esp as I took one policy out in the morning and then had to claim by the evening as new horse injured herself and had to be stiched back up.

NFU I have always found expensive and my horse is not valued at a lot.

SEIB are great, most competitive for me and have paid up every time and I have claimed.

NFU - had petplan for another horse and they really strung out the whole thing when he needed to be PTS after an injury. They hummed and hawed and in the end I had the deed done (for the sake of the horse and our sanity - it was so upsetting) and faxed them the day before saying this is happening at this address, on this date, if you want to send a vet send one quick. No reply at all:( I notified them and they seemed uninterested. Two weeks later they sent me a check for the full amount - it seemed all the agro had been for nothing - they paid up anyway.

NFU became very expensive and we are now with KBIS who have been fab and helpful and pay up on time.

I've been with pet plan for years and they've paid for everything (although ponies not insured atm due to oldy too old and little 'n not worth enough (cold callous woman that I am)
